New Hospital Plans Submitted for Fort William
NHS Highland has formally submitted plans for a new hospital in Fort William. The proposed £137 million facility is intended to replace the existing Belford Hospital, which has served the community for 60 years and is now considered inadequate for current healthcare demands.
The new hospital will be situated in the Blar Mhor area and is designed to include a modern accident and emergency department alongside surgical operating theatres. Additional planned facilities encompass a radiology department, a renal unit, and a maternity ward.
More than a decade has passed since the land for the new hospital was acquired, and local residents have expressed frustration over the delays in progressing the project. In the previous month, the Scottish government confirmed that its Budget plans allocate funding towards the Belford Hospital replacement scheme as part of broader investments in health infrastructure.
NHS Highland is collaborating with contractors Balfour Beatty and Keppie Design to develop the outline business case for the hospital. The health board emphasized that the new facility is intended to address the evolving needs of patients, staff, and visitors. Earlier statements from NHS Highland indicated that construction could potentially commence in October 2027.
Commitment to Sustainable and Welcoming Design
The design of the new hospital reflects a commitment to creating a welcoming, sustainable, and resilient environment, according to NHS Highland.
Chief Executive Fiona Davies described the submission of the planning application as a significant milestone.
"This project has been shaped by listening carefully to patients, staff and local people, and it is wonderful to see that vision now formally presented for planning consideration.
The new hospital will support the transformation of health and social care in this area for generations to come, and I look forward to continuing to work with our partners and the community as we take the next steps forward."
Community Feedback and Ongoing Concerns
Dr Michael Foxley, representing the Lochaber Health and Social Care Redesign Stakeholders' Group, expressed satisfaction with the submission of the planning application but noted that some issues remain under discussion.
"It's another step forward but there are some details that we are still pushing for,"
"We need to make sure there is sufficient car parking. There is to be a meeting about that in a few weeks time."
"We are still pushing for a separate endoscopy room and the big thing is to make sure there is an adequate place of safety for people with mental health problems or drug and alcohol problems."
