Cost Increase for Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and Cancer Centre
The estimated cost of the new Aberdeen maternity hospital and cancer centre has increased to over £438 million, representing a £15 million rise from the forecast published last month.
The Baird Family Hospital and Anchor Cancer Centre were initially scheduled to open in 2020 but have experienced multiple delays.
A report set to be reviewed by NHS Grampian outlines a new target opening date for the Baird Family Hospital in June 2027, while the Anchor Cancer Centre is expected to open in July this year.
Originally, the project was anticipated to cost up to £134 million. However, this estimate rose last month to more than £420 million, according to Scottish government documents. NHS Grampian now estimates the cost at £438.6 million.
Although project approval was granted over a decade ago, construction only commenced in 2021.
In December, BBC Scotland News disclosed that the project was encountering additional delays.
Construction challenges have included issues with water and ventilation systems, as well as design complications.
Design Review and Project Updates
Recent Scottish government infrastructure delivery documents from last month indicate the project investment at £423.6 million.
The Scottish government stated that the health board is implementing
"several changes to the new hospital, resulting from a design review"which have impacted both the completion date and overall cost.
A report scheduled for discussion at NHS Grampian's board meeting on Thursday notes that the project forecast now stands at £438.6 million.
The report also mentions that, based on insights from the Scottish Hospitals Inquiry, the new estimated opening dates will be subject to weekly review.
The Baird Family Hospital will provide maternity and breast-screening services, alongside a neonatal unit and operating theatre.
