Students Engage in Vegetable Growing Programme
Students from Le Rocquier School are participating in a new initiative to learn how to plant and cultivate their own vegetables. This scheme is organised in collaboration with the environmental organisation GROW Jersey.
The school's employability team initiated the group alongside GROW Jersey to provide students with practical skills beyond the traditional classroom environment.
The eight-week programme takes place at GROW Jersey's field in Sion, where students engage in activities such as planting hedges, weeding, watering, and studying sustainability concepts.

Student Perspectives on the Programme
Billy, aged 16, expressed his appreciation for the experience, highlighting the positive atmosphere and the opportunity to learn outside the classroom setting.
"I really like the culture here"
"It's something I really do appreciate that I can do"
He also emphasised the importance of environmental preservation on the island.
"I want at least this island to stay environmentally friend."
"It's important to know how growing things also affects the animals here."
Leanne, also 16, valued the chance to learn outdoors and described the experience as highly enjoyable.
"It's the best thing in the whole world"
"People love gardens so have to work hard."
"I've loved learning everything here and it's been so much fun getting out of the classroom."

Programme Development and Goals
Ellen Hawgood, a representative from Le Rocquier School, approached GROW Jersey to establish the programme.
"It's really important for them to just to get out get out in nature... it just makes a difference."
"I hope they just get the skills and knowledge to make the environment a little bit healthier for them and their children."
