Richard Osman and Bill Bailey Honoured by Princess Royal at Windsor

Richard Osman and Bill Bailey received honours from the Princess Royal at Windsor Castle for their contributions to literature, broadcasting, and entertainment. Chef Marcus Wareing and Olympic champion Toby Roberts were also recognised.

Honours Awarded at Windsor Castle

Author and broadcaster Richard Osman was among several notable individuals to receive honours from the Princess Royal at Windsor Castle on Tuesday. Comedian and musician Bill Bailey was also recognised during the ceremony.

Osman, known for his best-selling Thursday Murder Club novels and as the former host of the BBC quiz shows House of Games and Pointless, was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to literature and broadcasting.

Bill Bailey, the winner of Strictly Come Dancing in 2020, was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to entertainment.

Celebrity chef Marcus Wareing, a restaurateur and judge on MasterChef: The Professionals, was also honoured with an MBE for services to the culinary arts and broadcasting.

Richard Osman's Reflections

Osman shared that he had "a nice chat" with Princess Anne about writing and quizzing during the event.

Speaking to the Press Association after the ceremony, he expressed pride in his British heritage.

"I'm very proud of being from Britain."
"I'm very proud of the opportunities this country gave me. I'm very proud of growing up in a country that's full of writers and funny people and creative people,"
"I owe this country an awful lot, and I intend to pay as much of that back as I can."

Osman developed and co-hosted the BBC game show Pointless for 13 years before transitioning into fiction writing. He released the first book in his popular crime mystery series in 2020.

The series comprises six books that follow a group of pensioners in a Kent village who collaborate to solve murders.

Last year, the story was adapted into a Netflix film starring Dame Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan.

In March, it was announced that actor Michael Sheen will succeed Osman, aged 55, as the presenter of the BBC Two quiz show House of Games.

Bill Bailey's Career Highlights

Both Osman and Bailey were named in the King's New Year Honours list.

Bailey, who broke through in the mid-1990s, had his own BBC comedy show titled Is It Bill Bailey? He also portrayed the character Manny in the sitcom Black Books from 2000 to 2004.

He has appeared regularly on popular panel shows including Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Have I Got News for You, and QI.

In 2020, the Somerset-born stand-up comedian, then aged 55, became the oldest winner of Strictly Come Dancing.

Marcus Wareing's Culinary Achievements

Michelin-starred chef Marcus Wareing, aged 55, began his career as a teenager working at the Savoy in London. He later established several successful restaurants.

In 2006, Wareing served a custard tart to the late Queen Elizabeth II as part of her 80th birthday celebrations.

Additional Honours

Olympic rock climbing champion Toby Roberts, who won gold in both the boulder and lead events at Paris 2024, was also appointed an MBE on Tuesday.
