UK Government Announces Investment in Mossmorran Plant

The UK government has declared a £9 million investment aimed at new projects at the former Mossmorran ethylene plant, contingent upon the submission of a suitable plan.

Production at the chemical facility in Fife ceased last month after more than four decades of operation, placing 400 jobs at risk.

ExxonMobil, the plant's owner, reported losses of approximately £1 million per week while continuing operations at the site near Cowdenbeath.

Scottish Government Support and Task Force Efforts

The Scottish government had previously announced an identical £9 million funding package, intended to be disbursed over the next three years to alleviate the effects of the plant's closure.

This announcement followed the most recent meeting of a task force established to support the affected workforce and the broader community.

Statements from Officials and Investment Conditions

Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander stated that the UK government is "ready to invest" in the future of Mossmorran.

The UK government indicated that the site is currently "actively marketed" to potential investors.

Alexander emphasized that the funding depends on the presentation of suitable investment proposals and the identification of "appropriate commercial partners."

"We know this has been an incredibly difficult time for the plant's workers and their families, which is why the UK Government is stepping in.
We are determined to do all we can to ensure a successful future for the site itself, and so mitigate the impact on the wider Fife community."

Decommissioning and Job Guarantees

The decommissioning process of the plant is projected to conclude by 2028 and will not affect the adjacent Shell facility.

The UK government had earlier guaranteed that all Mossmorran employees would be offered job interviews at the Grangemouth plant near Falkirk.

Scottish Government Training Initiatives

Last week, the Scottish government also announced funding for "training and support" for 350 ExxonMobil workers at Fife College.

A £1.3 million fund has been allocated for courses in engineering, project management, and health and safety.

Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes described this as part of the broader £9 million Scottish government support package.

"The workers at Mossmorran have made a significant contribution to Scotland's economy and we are determined to make sure their skills are not lost.
We will not allow these workers to be left behind."
