Historic Hotel in Gretna Could Transform into Business Centre

The Greens Hotel in Gretna, once known as "the first hotel in Scotland," may be repurposed as a business centre. Formerly called the Garden House Hotel, the building served for many years as a venue for weddings and tourist accommodation.

The hotel earned its title due to its proximity to the Scottish border. However, it ceased operations as a hotel amid the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2023, it briefly reopened as a restaurant but closed again due to worsening economic conditions and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

A planning statement submitted for the change of use noted that the site was

"no longer financially viable"
as a hotel. Nonetheless, it suggested that the landmark could be converted
"for the benefit of the wider community."

Impact of the Pandemic on Gretna's Wedding Industry

Gretna is renowned as Scotland's wedding capital, hosting thousands of ceremonies annually. The pandemic and associated restrictions on gathering sizes severely affected this industry. Although attendance numbers have since improved, the hotel near the border was unable to sustain operations and closed in 2020.

After a brief reopening, the hotel has remained closed for the past two years.

Plans for Redevelopment as a Business Hub

New plans have been submitted to develop the site into

"high-quality office and commercial accommodation"
aimed at businesses on both sides of the border. The planning statement further described the potential transformation as creating a
"local hub of enterprise and support services."
