Usyk Retains Titles in Controversial 11th-Round Stoppage
Oleksandr Usyk successfully defended his world heavyweight titles in Egypt, securing an 11th-round stoppage victory over boxing newcomer Rico Verhoeven. The outcome sparked controversy due to the timing and nature of the referee's intervention.
Verhoeven, competing in only his second professional boxing match, demonstrated significant aggression throughout much of the fight. He managed to stun Usyk, a generational boxing great, in a manner few anticipated.
It appeared that Usyk may have been trailing on the judges' scorecards as the fight progressed. However, the Ukrainian champion mounted a late rally, landing a precise left uppercut that knocked Verhoeven to the canvas.
Although Verhoeven rose before the count concluded, the referee stopped the fight after Usyk unleashed a rapid combination in the final seconds of the round. This decision was widely viewed as excessively severe towards the challenger.
