Challenging Start for Sinner at Wimbledon
Jannik Sinner is encountering a difficult beginning to his Wimbledon title defense. Matches that he might have anticipated winning easily have instead become extended battles. Adding to the challenge is an impending heatwave forecasted to hit London this weekend, a condition that previously proved detrimental to him in Paris.

Following his progression to the last 32 with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory over world No. 48 Nuno Borges, Sinner openly acknowledged that his performance is still not meeting his expectations. When questioned about his forehand, he responded candidly.
“No, it’s not,”
He elaborated on other aspects of his game that require improvement, listing several areas.
“I’m trying to go a little bit more to the net,” he said. “Trying to be a bit more aggressive. Also the movement itself can improve on grass. Also, again, the return of serve, especially second serves, trying to be a little bit more aggressive, then we see how it goes. I feel like all shots I can do slightly better. But second match on grass, I was not looking for perfection. I tried to improve. Felt like at times I did. Now we’ll see how it goes.”
Performance Compared to Previous Matches
Sinner noted that his performance against Borges was an improvement compared to his earlier five-set win against Miomir Kecmanovic on Monday. However, the increasing time he spends on court is a concern.
Last year at Wimbledon, Sinner advanced through the first week with relative ease, losing only 17 games across his first three matches and spending just 5 hours and 15 minutes on court. In contrast, this year, after only two matches, he has lost 39 games and been on court for six hours and two minutes.
The Italian’s stamina has been a subject of scrutiny, and with London temperatures expected to reach 31°C (88°F), conserving energy early in the tournament is crucial.
Uncertainty About Tough Start
When asked if a challenging start was beneficial for gaining grass-court rhythm, especially since he did not participate in a warm-up tournament, Sinner expressed uncertainty.
“I don’t know,” he said. “For sure for the first match on grass, having a tough opener, then getting through, it was good, was important. Today I managed the first couple of sets very well in tricky moments. I know that I can, or hopefully I can, play a little bit better at times. Hopefully comes match by match, then we see.”
Though his answer lacked conviction, Sinner remains the strong favorite to retain his title, particularly with the absence of Carlos Alcaraz, making other contenders less likely to challenge him effectively.
Match Details Against Borges
Future opponents might note that Borges had opportunities during the match. After narrowly losing the first set, Borges had a set point at 5-4 in the second but missed a manageable shot into the net. A fortunate net cord for Sinner was followed by another error from Borges, resulting in the loss of the game and the set.
The third set presented further challenges; Sinner was broken once but managed to recover. Despite these difficulties, a surprise upset was never a serious possibility.
“The second set was important,” the Italian said after the match. “The dynamic can change in the third set if you go up two sets to love. That’s what happened. I broke him very early. Was a lack of concentration again in the third set. But I tried to bounce back straight away, which I’ve done.”
Upcoming Match Against Brooksby
Sinner is expected to face little difficulty against unseeded Jenson Brooksby in the third round on Friday. While Brooksby has a pleasant style of play, his serve is considered weak, and he lacks the groundstroke power to seriously challenge the world’s top players.
Nevertheless, Brooksby expressed confidence following his straight-sets win over No. 32 seed Ignacio Buse.
“It would probably be one of the couple toughest challenges right now in tennis, just for how consistently he’s been winning slams or big events,” Brooksby said. “But I’m always someone who loves that challenge. I never doubt my ability to be able to beat someone.”
Despite Brooksby’s optimism, Sinner remains the overwhelming favorite and is confident in regaining his best form.
“I need to get back to the rhythm, but matches like these help me a lot,” Sinner admitted. “I’m looking forward to what’s coming.”
