Xu embraces Wimbledon expectations

Mimi Xu has affirmed that she will not be overwhelmed by the expectations as she prepares to compete on the grass courts at Wimbledon this Monday.

At 18 years old, Xu first gained significant attention at SW19 last year when she received a wildcard entry into her debut Grand Slam tournament.

Drawn against fellow British player Emma Raducanu, Xu fought valiantly despite her loss, showcasing enough promise to capture the attention of the tennis world.

This year, Xu faces the challenge of competing without the advantage of relative anonymity, and her task will be more demanding.

Her opening match is against Australian Daria Kasatkina, ranked number 68 in the WTA standings, which places her 259 positions above Xu.

Expectation a privilege for Wales tennis star

Despite the pressure, Xu remains composed about her return to tennis's premier stage.

"Pressure is a privilege," said Xu.

"I think it's just going to carry me through each match every. Each tough moment I face it will get me through because the support I've received is absolutely amazing."

Recognized as Tennis Wales' player of the year in February, Xu carries the hopes of her nation. In 2025, she became Wales' first Wimbledon main draw representative in two decades and is eager to represent her country once again.

"It's an honour for me and I've got so many people backing me, especially in Swansea," she added.

"All of my friends, family, past coaches, everyone has been sending their support which I'm extremely grateful for. If I didn't have any of them in my journey I wouldn't be here today."

'It feels amazing'

Xu's growing popularity was evident at the Wrexham Open last October, where she won both the singles and doubles titles, drawing significant crowd support.

"Even though it was north Wales and I'm from south Wales the support I received was absolutely amazing. It got me through some tight moments and matches. It feels amazing to have such a group of people behind you," she said.

She confirmed she is "fit and healthy" following recent injury setbacks. The prospect of facing former French Open semi-finalist Kasatkina does not intimidate her, though she remains realistic given the presence of top players like world number one Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka in her section of the draw.

"I was really excited (when hearing the draw). She's a really skillful player and so many strengths. It's going to be a tough match but I'm training better every day. So I'm just ready to go out there and fight for each point," Xu added.
