Klugman Reflects on Nottingham Open Experience

British teenager Hannah Klugman described feeling "very different" after spending a week practicing with "some great players" following her second-round defeat at the Nottingham Open.

The 17-year-old secured her first WTA Tour victory on Tuesday by defeating fellow British player Harriet Dart, having entered the main draw as a lucky loser.

Klugman began strongly against world number 27 Marie Bouzkova on Thursday but eventually lost 7-5, 6-2.

Currently ranked world number 509, Klugman will improve her ranking by 97 places and has already secured a spot in the Wimbledon main draw via a wildcard granted earlier in the week.

"Getting to play matches against players in the top 150 or 200 was a great learning experience for me," Klugman said.
"My coach has been saying how much this is going to help me improve.
"I've been practising with some great players and I've seen what the day in, day out looks like for the future. I'm ready to build on it."

Match Details Against Bouzkova

Klugman fell behind early with a break but responded effectively, demonstrating solid defensive skills and hitting a passing forehand winner to level the score.

She created three break points at 5-3 but Bouzkova saved all of them and then won the last three games to take the first set.

In the second set, Klugman’s performance declined, with 45 unforced errors compared to 29 winners and nine double faults, allowing Bouzkova to dominate.

Despite the loss, the week was significant for Klugman as she transitions from junior to senior competition.

"She's such a quality player and there are glimpses of some good stuff in there from me, so there are so many positives to take," Klugman commented on Bouzkova.
"Mentally, I was great today and the crowd was amazing playing at home."

Other Tournament Highlights

At Queen's Club, fourth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina defeated France's Corentin Moutet to reach the quarter-finals.

The Spanish player, known for his superstition of wearing one black sock and one white sock, joked about possibly requesting an exemption from Wimbledon's all-white dress code.

"It was a long time ago, I wore odd socks and won that match and now I keep wearing them," he said.
"I will have to ask Wimbledon if I can keep wearing odd socks."

Davidovich Fokina is set to face 2024 champion Tommy Paul for a semi-final berth.

Meanwhile, French Open champion Alexander Zverev advanced to the quarter-finals at Halle with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) victory over fellow German Yannick Hanfmann.

American big server Ben Shelton also progressed, setting up a match against compatriot Taylor Fritz, whom he defeated in the Stuttgart Open final on Sunday.
