Olympic Women's Category Limited to Biological Females

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that from the 2028 Olympic Games onward, the women's category in Olympic sports will be restricted exclusively to biological females.

Eligibility for participation will be determined by a "once in a lifetime" sex verification test. This measure is designed to exclude transgender women and athletes with differences in sexual development (DSD) from competing in the women's category.

The policy is set to take effect starting with the Los Angeles Olympics.

IOC Leadership and Rationale

IOC president Kirsty Coventry emphasized that the decision was guided by medical expertise.

"At the Olympic Games even the smallest margins can be the difference between victory and defeat," she said.
"So it is absolutely clear that it would not be fair for biological males to compete in the female category. In addition, in some sports it would simply not be safe."
