Evloev Hands Murphy First Career Defeat

Movsar Evloev dealt a significant blow to Lerone Murphy's aspirations for the featherweight title by securing a majority decision victory at UFC London.

Widely regarded as a number one contender bout at the O2 Arena, Evloev gradually dominated his British opponent, with two judges scoring the fight 48-46 in favor of the Russian and one judge scoring it a 47-47 draw.

Murphy, from Manchester, had several strong moments in a competitive match, but a hip injury sustained in the third round hampered the 34-year-old, allowing Evloev to finish the fight with greater strength.

This loss ended Murphy's 18-fight unbeaten streak, while Evloev, aged 32, extended his undefeated record to 20 fights, positioning himself well for a potential title challenge against champion Alexander Volkanovski.

Currently ranked third in the UFC featherweight division, Murphy will likely need a significant victory over a top-ranked opponent to re-enter the title contention.

"Sorry for not giving you a fight. Make sure Evloev gets a title shot. He deserves it," said Murphy, maintaining a positive outlook despite the defeat.

"Yes, my hip popped in the third round, but no excuses. I'll be back. I've got work to do, but I'll be back."

Event Atmosphere and Fighter Reception

Despite notable wins from British fighters such as Nathaniel Wood and Mason Jones, the event lacked the energetic atmosphere typical of previous UFC London shows.

The card was missing prominent stars from past years like Tom Aspinall and Paddy Pimblett. Murphy was presented with a prime opportunity to shine but Evloev had other plans.

Murphy entered the fight after missing out on a title shot against Alexander Volkanovski in January, when Diego Lopes was selected instead.

Unlike the enthusiastic receptions given to Aspinall or Pimblett in prior events, Murphy's entrance was business-like, though he was cheered upon entering the octagon.

Evloev faced heavy booing but responded with a smile and a heart-shaped hand gesture toward the crowd.

Fight Breakdown

Supported by chants of "Oh Miracle Murphy," some of Murphy's best moments occurred with his back against the cage, landing a one-two uppercut combination and using leg kicks to keep Evloev at bay.

Although Evloev was expected to employ grappling tactics, he did not attempt his first takedown until the third round, when Murphy had been gaining the upper hand in striking.

Murphy quickly returned to his feet after the takedown and elicited cheers with a counter right hook, but Evloev ended the round on top, landing a flurry of strikes that caused a cut above Murphy's left eye.

The fourth round was briefly paused as Murphy recovered from an accidental groin strike, for which Evloev was penalized with a point deduction.

After informing his corner of a hip injury, Murphy struggled to defend takedowns as effectively, allowing Evloev to gain control in the later stages.

Despite the crowd's encouragement as Murphy repeatedly rose to his feet, Evloev's nine takedowns by fight's end underscored his dominance.

"I told you I was a better striker than him - joking!" Evloev remarked.

"Me and my coach were preparing more fakes, takedowns and punches. I think my punches are hard, I can hurt the opponent. Look at his face, he is damaged. I don't have to use my wrestling to get the win."

A Mixed Night for British Fighters

Michael 'Venom' Page secured his third consecutive UFC decision win in a lackluster bout against fellow Briton Sam Patterson.

Page landed 27 strikes compared to Patterson's 12, but the fight was met with boos from fans frustrated by the low activity levels.

In the co-main event, Liverpool's Luke Riley maintained his undefeated record by defeating Michael Aswell Jr via unanimous decision, marking the 13th win of his career.

Although Riley did not achieve the knockout he had predicted, his victory was well-earned through more impactful strikes throughout the fight.

Wales' Mason Jones delivered an impressive performance, overwhelming Axel Sola in a physically intense back-and-forth contest to win by unanimous decision.

London's Nathaniel Wood also secured a points victory against Losene Keita.

London's Shanelle Dyer made a memorable UFC debut by stopping Ravena Oliveira in the second round.

Conversely, Liverpudlian Kurtis Campbell suffered defeat in his first UFC bout, being knocked out by Danny Silva.
