McIlroy Sets Joint Clubhouse Lead
Rory McIlroy overcame challenging weather conditions during the opening round of the Genesis Invitational to establish a joint clubhouse lead at five under par. The Northern Irish golfer shares this position with American Jacob Bridgeman, trailing England's Aaron Rai by one stroke. Rai had two holes remaining when play was suspended due to darkness at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles.
Thirty players, including Rai, are scheduled to return on Friday at 07:00 local time (15:00 GMT) to complete their first rounds.
Weather Disruptions and Player Performances
Heavy rain caused puddling on the greens and resulted in a three-hour delay. When play resumed, competitors faced strong and cold winds. McIlroy commented on the conditions:
"I've started to just really enjoy this style of golf. If you had asked me 10 years ago, I didn't enjoy these conditions, but it's been a shift in mindset and maybe just a continuation of trying to build upon the skill set that I have. Then when it does get to conditions like this, I'm a lot more prepared."
When asked which conditions were easier to play in, McIlroy responded:
"The rain."
World number one Scottie Scheffler struggled again, continuing a difficult start following last week's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Scheffler, who has maintained a top-10 finish streak in 19 events since March's Player's Championship, currently sits at the bottom of the 72-player field at five over par with eight holes left to play.
Notable Performances and Tournament Venue
England's Marco Penge, competing in his debut PGA Tour season, is well positioned at three under par with nine holes remaining in his opening round.
This year, the tournament returned to its traditional venue at the Riviera Country Club after being relocated to Torrey Pines in 2025 due to the devastating wildfire in the Pacific Palisades.
McIlroy's Career Achievements
Rory McIlroy has secured 29 titles on the PGA Tour and has earned over $107 million in prize money throughout his career.
