"It feels like a dream has come true because I tried a couple times to be a major champion and I didn't get it," Ryu said. "Today I did it and I'm so happy right now."
Ryu's victory was notable considering her position after the opening round at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, where she was tied for 70th and ten shots behind the leader.
Canada's Brooke Henderson and Dewi Weber of the Netherlands both held the lead during the final round, which was delayed by weather, but they ultimately finished tied for third at -10. This marked a career-best major finish for Weber.
Ryu's fellow South Korean competitor, Ina Yoon, who had led by five strokes on the third day before falling back, rallied to finish second at -11.
American Nelly Korda, who was aiming for a historic third consecutive major championship, started the day four shots behind the leader but concluded the tournament tied for eighth at six under par.
Play on Sunday was delayed by three and a half hours due to weather conditions.
