Wales Flight Diverted Due to Weather

Wales, currently second in League B Group 1 with 10 points, level with group leaders Czech Republic, faced significant disruption ahead of their Women's World Cup qualifier against Montenegro. The team’s flight, scheduled to land in Podgorica, Montenegro, was diverted to Italy because of adverse weather conditions.

Rhian Wilkinson's squad departed Cardiff at 16:30 BST on Wednesday, expecting to arrive in Montenegro approximately three hours later. However, electrical storms around the Montenegrin capital prevented the plane from landing as planned.

Consequently, the flight was redirected to Brindisi, an Italian port city. Upon arrival, the team spent over three hours on the tarmac hoping for improved weather conditions that would permit travel to Montenegro. When conditions did not improve, the decision was made for the team to remain overnight in Brindisi.

This unexpected change required Football Association of Wales (FAW) officials to quickly secure accommodation for the team and arrange alternative travel plans for the following day.

"Due to storms in Podgorica, the Cymru women's national team flight was diverted this evening, landing safely in Brindisi airport in south Italy," the FAW stated on social media.

"The team will stay overnight in Italy and will arrange alternative travel to Montenegro ahead of Friday evening's match."
