Personal Reflections on Sports Anxiety

I’ve discovered a new way to increase my stress levels while watching sports. I believed I had exhausted every method to elevate my anxiety to the maximum, but now I have found another. Perhaps I require this anxiety to feel alive.

My connection to this kind of experience goes back many years. I have never been able to watch a sporting event without choosing a team or individual to support. This habit began when I was about five years old. I idolized my grandfather, and because he supported West Brom, I wanted them to win as well. Such habits can be addictive and possibly unhealthy. I thought I would outgrow it, but it has intensified over time and extended beyond my own football team.

As a child, my admiration was directed towards adults, who were old enough to be my parents. I wanted the best for them. Now, the athletes are young enough to be my children or grandchildren, which makes it even more intense because I feel protective towards them. I attended Wimbledon this week and witnessed the return of the great Serena Williams, which was remarkable. However, upon seeing her opponent, who appeared pale, slight, and fearful, I realized I was in trouble emotionally.

Team Lineups

Below are the teams lining up for the anthems as I write:

Spain (4-3-3): Simon; Porro, Cubarsi, Laporte, Cucurella; Pedri, Rodri, Olmo; Yamal, Oyarzabal, Baena.

Subs: Raya, J Garcia, Pubill, Grimaldo, E Garcia, Llorente, Merino, Fabian Ruiz, Gavi, Zubimendi, Torres, Pino, Williams, Munoz, Iglesias.

Austria (4-2-3-1): A Schlager; Posch, Danso, Alaba, Laimer; Seiwald, X Schlager, Schmid, Wanner, Schmid; Gregoritsch.

Subs: Wiegele, Pentz, Affengruber, Lienhart, Mwene, Friedl, Svoboda, Grillitsch, Chukwuemeka, Ljubicic, Prass, Schoepf, Arnatouvic, Kalajdzic, Wimmer.

Historical Context

Spain have not won a knockout game at the World Cup since 2010, when the legendary Andres Iniesta scored the only goal in the final against the Netherlands.

Austria’s last knockout game was in 1954, when they reached the semi-finals. They advanced to the second round in 1978, eliminating Spain in the process, and again in 1982. However, those tournaments featured a second group stage, so they did not play direct knockout matches.

England’s Altitude Challenge in Mexico City

Thomas Tuchel has stated that England will face a significant disadvantage due to the high altitude of Mexico City when they play Mexico in the last 16 of the World Cup. He criticized a FIFA rule that has eliminated one potential acclimatization strategy.

The Football Association has investigated the effects of altitude on the England players and consulted teams from other sports, including the British Olympic team. One conclusion is that if it is not feasible to arrive at the venue 10 days in advance to acclimate, it is preferable to arrive on the day of the match, as close to kickoff as possible.

However, FIFA has mandated that from the last 16 stage onwards, teams must train at venue-specific sites near the stadiums the day before matches. Consequently, England will have to fly to Mexico City from their base in Kansas City on Friday afternoon. They returned to Kansas City on Wednesday from Atlanta after their victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the last 32.

Team Changes for Spain and Austria

Spain have made two changes to the team that defeated Uruguay 1-0 in their final group game: Dani Olmo and Pedro Porro replace Mikel Merino and Marcos Llorente.

Austria have introduced Kevin Danso, Paul Wanner, and Michael Gregoritsch in place of Philipp Lienhart, Phillip Mwene, and Marko Arnautovic.

Donald Trump’s Truth Social Activity

At 4:38 pm on 28 June, Donald Trump posted a Truth on Truth Social. This was not unusual, as his feed is known for its relentless output.

That same afternoon, he also posted at 3:58 pm, 3:59 pm, and twice at 7:42 pm, all in a distinctive, cartoonish tone reminiscent of a 1970s television advertisement character infused with voodoo and vitamins, attempting to explain geopolitics in language akin to arguing with a nine-year-old sibling.

Trump’s messages that afternoon included boasts about his allegedly impressive new ballroom, a 600-word Truth regarding the poor condition of certain golf courses, and complaints about losing the latest appeal in his sexual harassment case. The central grievance was that the jury was permitted to view a video that seemingly shows Trump boasting about his skill at sexually harassing people. It is important to note that this individual is the president of the United States.

Among these posts, the 4:38 pm Truth was notable for its relatively low-key tone, featuring implied rather than direct insults, and for its focus on the World Cup.

Spain’s Departure from Chattanooga

At the Embassy Suites on Broad Street in downtown Chattanooga, the team vans have departed for the last time. The day before their departure, as on every day prior, a small group of children climbed barriers and trees to catch a glimpse of Spain’s players.

A girl stood on a ladder holding two placards above the fence. One read: “I’ve been here three weeks. I know you’ve seen me!” The other said: “Please come out!” On Wednesday afternoon, Tennessee time, the players appeared. They will not return.

Spain are leaving their base and traveling to Los Angeles, and if all goes well, from there to Dallas. They do so with more doubts than before the World Cup began. Fabián Ruiz commented that externally things may appear one way, but internally at the training ground, following the final session before their westward flight, the situation is somewhat different.

Fabián said, “Sometimes things don’t go the way we would like; we’re working to ensure they do.”

Fabián is not very verbose and is seldom given the opportunity to speak extensively, but the word he returns to is "natural." He suggests that debates are for others.

Match Preview: Spain vs Austria

Welcome to live coverage of the Spain versus Austria match in Inglewood. France and Lionel Messi have dominated the World Cup, but Spain remain the favorites among the other contenders. After recovering from a surprising draw with Cape Verde, Spain defeated Saudi Arabia decisively and eliminated Uruguay. The core of their successful Euro 2024-winning team remains intact.

It would be a significant upset if Spain fail to progress past a limited Austria team, who advanced to the knockout round when Sasa Kalajdzic scored a decisive goal.

The winner of this match will face either Portugal or Croatia in the last 16.

Kickoff: 12 pm local / 3 pm EDT / 8 pm BST / 5 am AEST
