Motherwell's Callum Slattery Receives Four-Game Ban for Simulation

Motherwell's Callum Slattery has been suspended for four games for simulation that led to St Mirren's Richard King's red card, which was later overturned. The club questions the consistency of retrospective bans and the quality of evidence used.

Motherwell's Callum Slattery (R) remonstrates with St Mirren's Richard King (L) after he is shown a red card during a William Hill Premiership match between St Mirren and Motherwell at the SMiSA Stadium, on February 21, 2026, in Paisley, Scotland.

Slattery Receives Suspension for Simulation Incident

Motherwell midfielder Callum Slattery has been issued a four-game suspension for simulation, an action that led to the dismissal of St Mirren defender Richard King during their match last month.

During the second half of Motherwell's 5-0 victory in Paisley, Slattery fell to the ground following an incident involving King. The referee, Calum Scott, was informed of the situation by one of his assistants and subsequently issued a red card to King for contact with Slattery's face. Despite an apparent absence of contact, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) did not intervene to overturn the decision.

Following the match, King's red card was overturned on appeal. However, Slattery was cited by the Scottish FA's compliance officer and received a four-game ban, two of which are suspended. Motherwell have expressed their dissatisfaction with the ban.

Motherwell's Response to the Ban

The club highlighted the introduction of "a third layer of refereeing" and raised concerns about the "poor quality" of camera footage, which they argue does not conclusively show that King's arm did not make contact with Slattery's face.

"This is the first incident in Scottish football where a player has received a match suspension via retrospective action for inappropriate behaviour," Motherwell stated.
"And we question why this incident meets the criteria, yet countless others don't.
All clubs have witnessed similar incidents in games which haven't resulted in retrospective bans; therefore, we will watch and expect consistency going forward so that Callum isn't treated differently to others."
