Highlights: Man City Draw at Bournemouth as Arsenal Clinch Premier League Title

Manchester City experienced a dramatic 24 hours as they lost the Premier League title and faced the announcement of manager Pep Guardiola's potential exit.

News regarding Guardiola's future emerged on Monday night, followed by City's 1-1 draw against Bournemouth on Tuesday. This result allowed Arsenal to secure the Premier League championship with a four-point lead and one game remaining, ending their 22-year wait for the title.

Guardiola has stated he will decide his future after discussions with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, though expectations suggest he will conclude his decade-long, trophy-filled tenure. Enzo Maresca is anticipated to succeed him.

Guardiola, whose team will face Aston Villa on Sunday in their final match, told Sky Sports:

"I could say that I have one more year of contract and with the conversations I have had for many years, always from my experience when you announce - whatever you announce - during the competition, [it] is a bad, bad result.
And like you understand, the first person I have to talk to is my chairman because we both decided when we finish the season we will sit and we will talk. It is as simple as that and after we will take the decision."

The 55-year-old, who led City to Carabao Cup and FA Cup victories this season, added:

"Listen, I have one more year of contract.
I will not tell you [a decision] here because I have to talk with my chairman, with my players, with my staff because when we play for the FA Cup, qualification for the Champions League, the Premier League it's just one thing in my mind and focus: Try to bring the team to the highest point and it's what we have done."

Arsenal, led by Guardiola's former assistant Mikel Arteta, have been front-runners for much of the season and secured their first title since Arsene Wenger's 2004 'Invincibles'.

City also prepare to face Paris St-Germain in the Champions League final on 30 May. Guardiola offered his congratulations:

"On behalf of Man City, congratulations to Arsenal, Mikel and all the backroom staff on the Premier League that they deserve.
He put a lot of effort and work. Congratulations to him."

Arsenal Crowned Champions as Man City Draw at Bournemouth

Key moments that shaped the Premier League title race included Bournemouth qualifying for Europe for the first time, though the Champions League remains out of reach for them.

'Guardiola Will Be Remembered as an Icon'

During City's crucial match at Vitality Stadium, Guardiola was met by 22 photographers and a fan displaying a 'Pep Stay' bedsheet. Supporters chanted "One more year, one more year, Guardiola," but Guardiola left the field quickly after the draw, as players acknowledged the traveling fans.

If confirmed, these developments mark a significant summer of change for City.

Until recently, Guardiola insisted he had "one more year" on his contract. However, it now seems his tenure, which began in 2016 replacing Manuel Pellegrini, is concluding.

Guardiola's achievements at City include historic milestones such as the first top-flight team to reach 100 points, winning four consecutive Premier League titles, and securing a Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League treble in 2023, which he regards as his greatest accomplishment with the club.

Despite winning domestic cups this season, City missed out on the league title for the second consecutive year, a first in Guardiola's managerial career, which also includes stints at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

His departure, if confirmed, will likely be tinged with regret as City held the title advantage just 15 days earlier but dropped points in a 3-3 draw at Everton, which Arsenal capitalized on.

Sunday's match against Villa is expected to be an emotional farewell to a manager who has brought significant success to the club over the past decade.

Former City defender Nedum Onuoha told BBC Radio 5 Live:

"Pep Guardiola's DNA has spread to other teams as well. I think Pep at Man City will be remembered as an icon.
For them to find so much success, trips to Wembley on such big occasions. He will be remembered as the greatest ever. The success that came at this time came when it was very competitive in the league.
The fact he is going to step aside, and someone has to come and try to build another legacy will be very different. Guardiola at Man City has been a constant. There is a huge void, but then huge potential."

'Impossible to Make the Impact of Phenomenal Pep'

Guardiola's successor is expected to be Enzo Maresca, a former assistant and key figure in City's academy who contributed to the 2023 treble season before managing Leicester City and Chelsea.

Maresca is reportedly the chosen candidate, with talks at an advanced stage. He faces the challenge of succeeding one of football's most distinguished coaches.

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton commented on BBC Radio 5 Live:

"How can anybody replace what Pep has done for so many seasons at Manchester City in terms of the brand of football and winning trophies?
It's impossible to come in and make the impact which Pep Guardiola has had, not just at Manchester City, but in the Premier League as a whole. With regard to Pep being one of the greatest managers of all time? Yeah, absolutely.
With regard to the Premier League, it will always be Sir Alex Ferguson, but in terms of what Pep Guardiola has achieved and transformed, in terms of making coaches think and what football fans think. I think that he has been phenomenal."

Maresca is expected to bring his own staff, including former Leicester and Chelsea assistant and ex-City goalkeeper Willy Caballero.

Meanwhile, the outcome of City's 115 alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations remains unresolved, with uncertainty about whether it will be disclosed before any managerial appointment.

'There Is Going to Be a Huge Void'

Guardiola has reshaped City's squad over the past three transfer windows, adding 11 new players. Should he depart, Maresca will lead a team well-positioned and eager to pursue further success.

The club also faces changes in leadership as captain Bernardo Silva and defender John Stones are set to leave this summer upon contract expiration, with other players potentially departing as well.

Players such as Nathan Ake, James Trafford, Rico Lewis, and Mateo Kovacic have seen limited playing time, while Omar Marmoush and Nico Gonzalez may also be transferred.

Former City goalkeeper Shay Given remarked:

"I believe there is going to be a huge void when Pep Guardiola leaves the football club.
You look across the city at what happened at Manchester United with Sir Alex [when he left as manager in 2013]. That's the last thing City want.
In [director of football] Hugo Viana, who has been there a year, they have let him settle in at the club. He will be here for the next number of years, I am sure.
The handover won't be as volatile as Manchester United, but it is easier said than done. Who comes in? That's the huge next big thing."

Guardiola has now failed to win the Premier League title in consecutive years for the first time in his career.
