James Morrison Appointed Permanent Head Coach at West Brom
West Bromwich Albion have confirmed James Morrison as their permanent head coach on a two-year contract following his successful interim tenure that ensured the club's Championship survival.
The 39-year-old former Baggies midfielder, who spent 12 years playing for West Bromwich Albion and scored 39 goals in 341 appearances, initially took over on an interim basis after the dismissal of Eric Ramsay in late February. A week later, he was appointed to lead the team until the end of the season.
Under Morrison's guidance, West Brom experienced a resurgence, achieving four wins, six draws, and suffering only one defeat, which occurred in his first match in charge against Oxford United.
During this period, the club briefly fell into the relegation zone but appeared to secure safety with a victory over Watford. However, a subsequent two-point deduction for breaching financial regulations left the club vulnerable with two games remaining. Ultimately, West Brom confirmed their Championship status with a draw in their final home fixture against Ipswich Town.
"I'm honoured and humbled to have been appointed as head coach of this great football club," Morrison said.
"The togetherness we have displayed in recent months - as players, staff, directors and fans - shows the enormous power of the Albion when it's focused on a collective goal.
"We must now use that passion and energy to set the club back on course for success."
Reflecting on the decisive result against Ipswich Town, Morrison added:
"I will never forget the end to the Ipswich game when it felt like it was us against the world, with the atmosphere off the pitch matching the efforts of the players on it."
Club Chairman Praises Morrison's Leadership
West Brom chairman Shilen Patel commended Morrison for his leadership during a challenging period for the club, stating that he and his coaching staff played a crucial role in uniting the club.
"James has led the club out of a real moment of adversity and helped bring us all together," Patel said.
"We did not survive by accident, and James' appointment is thoroughly deserved.
"His burgeoning leadership was key to inspiring and uniting the entire club when we needed it most.
"He embodies what this club is about and conveys the standards expected by our fans."
Patel also expressed confidence in Morrison's ability to guide the club forward:
"He has all the qualities required to take this club forward and I am excited by a future with him leading our players."
