South of Scotland Football League Faces Team Shortage

The South of Scotland Football League (SOSFL), with origins dating back to 1892, currently comprises teams exclusively from Dumfries and Galloway. However, this will change in the upcoming season as Saltire City FC, based in Glasgow, prepares to join the league.

Saltire City FC: Glasgow's New Entrant

Saltire City FC plays at Budhill Park in Shettleston and will compete against established teams from the south. This move makes them the northernmost team in the SOSFL.

The Vision Behind Saltire City FC

Paul Davies, the founder of Saltire City FC, has extensive experience in football, including a recent role with Glasgow Girls FC. Approximately 16 months ago, he began exploring the possibility of establishing a team and entering the SOSFL.

"That process started 16 months ago when there was no entry into the West of Scotland Football League (WOSFL)," he explained. "The only entry you could get was if a team folded."

Despite subsequent restructuring in the WOSFL that might have allowed Saltire City to join, Davies chose to continue discussions with the SOSFL.

"I just felt, having managed there, for seven or eight years - it is quite saturated," he said. "From where we play in Glasgow we've probably got five or six teams just round about the area and we are all vying for that same type of player.
"We were wanting to look at a different type of player and make it more a player pathway and I felt the SOSFL gave us that opportunity."

Confidence in Competitiveness

Davies expressed confidence that Saltire City FC will be competitive within the SOSFL.

"We can go and be competitive," he said. "We can look at players from 17 to 24 years old and give them the challenge as well where possibly they wouldn't get that in the fourth division or third division in the west."

Current Squad and Innovative Recruitment

At present, Saltire City FC has approximately 10 players signed and aims to complete its squad by the end of March. The club is also collaborating with a company to utilize artificial intelligence for identifying players with development potential.

Setting Goals for the First Season

Regarding success in their inaugural season, Davies emphasized competitiveness and establishing a foundation for future progress.

"Being competitive in the league - going down there with a young team and competing with the teams," Paul said. "Using year one as a baseline monitor of where we want to be.
"I have had a look, I was down at St Cuthberts the other night and my assistant manager was a manager in that league with St Cuthberts. We have got a good idea of the league and its standard."

SOSFL's Expansion Efforts

The SOSFL is actively seeking additional teams to join, particularly as it anticipates losing a few clubs to the new Lowland League West. The league has begun to extend its reach beyond its traditional Dumfries and Galloway base, welcoming Saltire City FC and potentially more teams from outside the region in the near future.
