Donegal Secure First Division One Title Since 2007

Donegal secured their second National Football League Division One title with a commanding 3-20 to 2-10 victory over Kerry at Croke Park.

A decisive three-goal burst within two minutes in the second half by Conor O'Donnell, Michael Murphy, and Caolan McGonagle established Donegal's dominance under Jim McGuinness' management.

Additionally, Donegal scored four two-pointers, contributing to their emphatic win and avenging their defeat in last year's All-Ireland final.

This triumph marks Donegal's first top-tier league title since 2007 and their second overall.

Donegal Address Previous Defeat

Marking the centenary of National Football League finals, the event featured a repeat of the previous year's All-Ireland final for the first time in ten years.

Donegal fielded ten players who started last July's final, while Kerry included nine of the players who secured their 39th Sam Maguire title.

One key focus following last year's final was the role of Paudie Clifford and how Jim McGuinness would manage the player who was unmarked and pivotal in their loss.

Clifford's absence due to a managed return from injury means this tactical question remains unresolved until a probable encounter later in the summer.

David Clifford, Paudie's brother, did not participate in the league phase win in Ballyshannon but started this final as anticipated. Instead of facing Brendan McCole, he was marked by Caolan McColgan in a strategic move by McGuinness.

Goals Determine the Outcome

The match's intensity was reflected in the subdued crowd of 35,701, with the score level at 1-1 after 13 minutes.

Kerry had an early scoring opportunity when Clifford's two-point attempt fell short, but Graham O'Sullivan's shot was expertly blocked on the line by Peadar Mogan.

Michael Langan responded with a two-pointer, followed by Joe O'Connor assisting Keith Evans, who scored a goal from a break in front of the Hogan Stand.

Playing with the aid of a strong breeze, Donegal responded emphatically, scoring the next 10 points without reply, including two-pointers from Langan and Murphy.

During this scoring run, Murphy received a yellow card for a tussle with Dylan Casey; the Kerry supporters considered him fortunate to avoid further sanctions.

Kerry went 20 minutes without scoring until Sean O'Shea ended the drought, with Donegal leading 0-13 to 1-2 at halftime.

Early in the second half, Evans and Dylan Geaney scored quickly for Kerry, but Donegal responded with three goals in rapid succession within two minutes.

Langan assisted O'Donnell for a goal to the top corner, Murphy intercepted a pass and scored to the bottom left corner, and McGonagle chipped the ball over Shane Murphy to the net's roof, extending Donegal's lead to 16 points just ten minutes into the half.

Murphy added another two-pointer as Kerry failed to score for 19 more minutes. When Armin Heinrich finally scored, the polite applause suggested many Kerry fans had already left.

The final quarter was played at a relaxed pace with the outcome decided. Clifford did score a goal but was effectively marked by McColgan throughout the match.

The 13-point margin reflected Donegal's superiority, though they remain aware of tougher challenges ahead.
