Alli Called Up to Ireland Squad

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has included Portsmouth winger Millenic Alli in his squad for the upcoming friendly match against North Macedonia, scheduled for Tuesday at 19:45 BST in Dublin.

The 26-year-old winger has earned his first call-up to the senior national team and participated in training sessions at Abbotstown on Sunday.

Career Progression

Alli began his football career in England playing at the non-league level before signing for Exeter City in 2024. His performances attracted the attention of Luton Town, who acquired him for a transfer fee of £1.5 million, bringing him to Kenilworth Road.

During the final six games of last season, the Dublin-born player scored four goals. Despite his contributions, Luton Town was relegated to League One.

Loan to Portsmouth and Current Form

Although Alli fell out of favor at Luton, he secured a loan move to Portsmouth, where he has started all 14 matches since joining Fratton Park. He has scored one goal as Portsmouth fights to avoid relegation from the Championship.

His recent performances have drawn the attention of Ireland manager Hallgrimsson, who has included him in the squad, especially as several players are unavailable for the upcoming friendly.

Squad Changes and Context

Midfielder Jack Taylor has withdrawn from the squad due to family reasons. Additionally, Sammie Szmodics has returned to Derby County to continue his recovery from a concussion sustained during the World Cup play-off semi-final defeat on penalties to the Czech Republic on Thursday.

That defeat in Prague ended the Republic of Ireland's hopes of qualifying for the upcoming summer World Cup. Meanwhile, North Macedonia was defeated by Denmark in their semi-final, setting the stage for the friendly match between the two nations.
