Full time: Aston Villa 4-2 Liverpool

Aston Villa delivered an impressive performance at Villa Park, securing a Champions League place by dominating Liverpool. Ollie Watkins was the standout player, scoring twice, while Morgan Rogers and John McGinn contributed with exquisite curling goals. Liverpool’s two goals came from Virgil van Dijk headers, but defensive vulnerabilities left them exposed and at risk of a heavier defeat.

Stephen Cottrell remarked,

“First off, well played Villa. Tonight should be about them.”
He also noted the absence of several key Liverpool players, stating,
“Second, the five players are missing.”

In the final moments, Villa made substitutions with Douglas Luiz and Jadon Sancho coming on for John McGinn and Youri Tielemans shortly after McGinn’s goal.

Matt Burgess questioned,

“Go on then, who are the four or five players Slot is missing? Serious question? Slot is not a man-manager. He’s an injury-avoidance manager.”
The response listed Isak, Ekitike, Alisson, Wirtz, possibly Frimpong, and Salah, noting that Wirtz and Salah were not fit to start but appeared during the match.

Late Goals and Substitutions

At 90+2 minutes, Van Dijk scored his second goal of the night from a corner taken short by Szoboszlai, who passed to Kerkez before delivering a cross that Van Dijk headed in at the far post.

Earlier, at 90+1 minutes, Ngumoha executed a slick one-two with Kerkez and fired a shot deflected behind by Konsa.

The match included eight minutes of added time. Villa’s performance was as strong as their Europa League semi-final second leg against Forest. McGinn’s curling shot into the far top corner at 89 minutes, despite a slight touch from Mamardashvili, extended Villa’s lead to 4-1.

At 84 minutes, Villa substituted Emi Buendia for Ian Maatsen. Ngumoha’s deep cross was headed back by Van Dijk to Chiesa, whose volley was saved by Martinez.

With the scoreline, Liverpool’s Champions League qualification depended on their next match against Brentford and other results involving Bournemouth, Manchester City, and Freiburg.

Villa’s counter-attacks were effective, although Barkley’s overhit pass to Rogers at 80 minutes interrupted a promising move.

At 78 minutes, Liverpool’s defensive record was highlighted, having conceded 76 goals this season, the most since 1992-93.

Niall Mullen commented on Liverpool’s managerial situation,

“Remember Brendan Rodgers got an extra season in 2015 only to be canned in the autumn? Based largely on a title challenge off the back of a generational player having an all-time season. All of which leads me to believe Klopp will be back in October.”

At 75 minutes, Mo Salah replaced Cody Gakpo. Shortly after, Watkins capitalized on a loose ball following a penalty appeal for Konsa’s challenge on Mac Allister. Mamardashvili made a double save but could not prevent Watkins from scoring from close range.

Second Half Action

At 71 minutes, VAR reviewed an incident involving Mac Allister and Konsa, concluding no foul had occurred. The players had pushed each other, with Konsa grabbing Mac Allister’s shirt but no punch was thrown.

Buendia struck the crossbar at 70 minutes with a curling shot that beat the keeper but hit the woodwork.

Paul Griffin criticized the style of play, writing,

“They need to get rid of this pointless open-play business. All this passing and movement is betraying the essence of the game, which is to whip the ball into the back stick towards a group of men in pastel shirts jostling and bumping like they’re having an altercation in a 3am kebab house.”

Villa had a chance on the break at 68 minutes, but Watkins underhit a pass to Rogers, allowing defender Kerkez to intervene.

At 67 minutes, Federico Chiesa and Florian Wirtz replaced Ryan Gravenberch and Joe Gomez for Liverpool. McGinn received a booking at 66 minutes for a challenge on Kerkez.

Watkins was denied again by Mamardashvili at 65 minutes after a well-timed run and close-range shot.

Kev McManus expressed frustration with Liverpool’s season,

“Another really difficult watch. Been going to see for 50 years now. I know time plays tricks with your memory but this season has been painful. It’s as bad as I can remember, right up there with the Hodgson and the end of Brendan Rogers. No plan, no vision, no passion. It sounds like we are sticking with manager but I’m not convinced and most of the people I speak to at the match feel the same.”

Watkins went down under a challenge from Konate at 63 minutes but the referee allowed play to continue. Gomez was booked at 62 minutes for a late tackle on Buendia. Liverpool expressed dissatisfaction that Watkins avoided a second yellow card before scoring.

Watkins’ Impact and Liverpool’s Defensive Struggles

At 59 minutes, Watkins had another chance after a quick counter-attack but Mamardashvili saved his attempt. Watkins then scored at 57 minutes after Liverpool lost possession; Rogers and Buendia combined to set him up for a precise finish.

At 56 minutes, Ngumoha hit the post with a curling shot, and Gakpo missed an open rebound.

Watkins was flagged offside for a disallowed goal at 55 minutes. Ian Copestake commented on Liverpool’s kit,

“Despite Liverpool’s continued mauveness, I do dig this away kit. All-a-tinkle with nostalgia for Terry Mac in his version and the all-conquering late 70s team.”

Van Dijk equalized at 52 minutes with a header from a Szoboszlai free-kick after VAR confirmed no foul had occurred.

Niall Mullen humorously noted,

“They are the same people who said that Marcellus Wallace threw Antoine Roccamora off a four-storey balcony because he gave Marcellus’ wife a foot rub. They may be unreliable.”

Ngumoha’s run at 50 minutes led to a blocked shot by Pau Torres and an off-target follow-up by Gomez.

Colum Fordham praised Villa’s first-half performance but criticized Liverpool’s defending, suggesting manager Slot’s position was precarious.

Second Half Begins

The second half started quietly. Drew questioned Liverpool’s missing elements, suggesting the team lacked identity and collective plan, and highlighted the injuries affecting Slot’s best XI.

Villa introduced Ross Barkley for Victor Lindelof at halftime.

Matt Dony praised Szoboszlai’s technique and influence despite Liverpool’s struggles this season.

Morgan Rogers’ fine goal gave Villa the lead at halftime. The first half was balanced, but Villa held the advantage and were on course for Champions League qualification.

Watkins was booked at 45+3 minutes for playing on after being flagged offside and scoring. Jamie Carragher questioned whether Liverpool’s keeper Mamardashvili could have done better with the goal, noting he was close to making a save.

Rogers scored at 42 minutes after a well-executed passing sequence involving Digne and McGinn, curling the ball into the far corner.

Gomez cleared a dangerous cross at 41 minutes. Cash was booked at 38 minutes for a late tackle on Kerkez. Liverpool dominated possession but struggled to supply Watkins effectively.

Szoboszlai’s cross at 33 minutes was headed over by Mac Allister, who showed frustration.

Throughout the match, Liverpool’s injury challenges and defensive lapses were evident, while Aston Villa capitalized on their opportunities to secure a significant victory.
