T20 World Cup, Super 8s Group 1, Ahmedabad
South Africa secured a commanding 76-run victory against defending champions India in their opening match of the Super 8s phase of the T20 World Cup, reinforcing their status as strong contenders for the title.
In a rematch of the 2024 final held in Barbados, where India emerged victorious by seven runs, South Africa set a challenging target of 188 runs. This was largely due to a resilient 65-run innings off 35 balls by David Miller and a rapid 45 from Dewald Brevis in 29 balls, which helped the team recover from an early collapse of 20-3 after four overs.
India, who entered the match undefeated with four wins in the group stage, struggled with an uncharacteristically subdued batting performance in Ahmedabad. They appeared resigned to defeat after losing five wickets for 51 runs by the 10th over and were eventually bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs.
Opting to bat first, South Africa faced early setbacks as captain Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock, and Ryan Rickelton were dismissed for single-digit scores within the powerplay. Miller and Brevis then took charge to rebuild the innings.
Miller, who has experience playing for the Ahmedabad-based Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, displayed confidence from the outset, effortlessly finding boundaries. Brevis supported well, initially playing a secondary role before accelerating the scoring rate.
Brevis advanced the innings pace and narrowly missed a half-century by five runs, while Miller continued to anchor the innings, reaching his 50 in just 26 balls. By the time Miller was dismissed in the 16th over, South Africa had established a strong position at 152-5.
Despite effective death bowling from Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, South Africa finished strongly with Tristan Stubbs contributing an unbeaten 44, including 20 runs off Hardik Pandya's final over, taking the total to 187-7.
Markram initiated the bowling attack by dismissing the dangerous Ishan Kishan for a duck in the first over. Shortly after, Marco Jansen removed Tilak Varma three balls later.
Kishan's opening partner Abhishek Sharma ended his streak of three consecutive ducks but managed only 15 runs before falling to Jansen. Captain Suryakumar Yadav was the fifth Indian batsman to be dismissed midway through the innings.
India's hopes dwindled as Keshav Maharaj took three wickets in the 15th over, and Jansen secured two more in the 19th over, finishing with impressive figures of 4-22 to wrap up the tailenders.
Looking ahead, India must defeat Zimbabwe in Chennai on Thursday to remain in the tournament, while South Africa will stay in Ahmedabad to face former champions West Indies on Wednesday.
