Markram’s Unbeaten 82 Leads South Africa to Nine-Wicket Victory

South Africa moved significantly closer to securing a spot in the T20 World Cup semi-finals with a commanding nine-wicket victory against the West Indies on Thursday.

The chase was dominated by a rapid 95-run opening partnership between captain Aiden Markram, who remained unbeaten on 82, and Quinton de Kock, who scored 47. This partnership was achieved in just eight overs, effectively setting the tone for the rest of the innings. Ryan Rickelton contributed an unbeaten 45 as South Africa reached 177 for one in 16.1 overs, extending their unbeaten streak in the tournament to six matches. The West Indies managed 176 for eight after being 83 for seven earlier in their innings.

South Africa has the opportunity to top Group 1 in the Super 8s stage if they defeat Zimbabwe in their final game on Sunday. Meanwhile, West Indies will face India in their concluding group match.

Dominant Batting Performance Sets the Pace

Markram played a pivotal role in the chase, striking seven fours and four sixes in his 82 runs off 46 balls. De Kock supported with an aggressive 47 from 24 balls, including four sixes and four fours. Rickelton maintained the momentum with 45 runs off 28 balls. The unbroken partnership between Markram and Rickelton amounted to 82 runs, and South Africa secured the win with over three overs remaining, marking their fourth victory with such a margin in Ahmedabad.

The only wicket to fall during the chase was claimed by all-rounder Roston Chase, who was included in the West Indies lineup in place of spinner Akeal Hosein.

West Indies Fight Back but Fall Short

West Indies’ fast bowlers Romario Shepherd and Jason Holder were unable to defend the total despite their efforts with the bat. Shepherd scored an unbeaten 52 and Holder made 49, combining for an 89-run partnership that lifted the West Indies from a precarious 83 for seven. Shepherd’s innings included his first half-century in T20 internationals.

The West Indies innings began with a frenetic powerplay during which they lost four wickets in 11 balls, reaching 52 for four. South Africa, however, dropped three catches within the first six overs, offering the West Indies some reprieve.

Bowling Highlights and Key Wickets

Kagiso Rabada took two wickets for 22 runs, including a faint edge from West Indies captain Shai Hope and the dismissal of Shimron Hetmyer, who top-edged a pull shot to wicketkeeper De Kock in the third over. Lungi Ngidi claimed three wickets for 30 runs, removing Brandon King and Roston Chase in the fourth over.

Holder and Shepherd accelerated the scoring during the death overs. Holder notably hit Marco Jansen for 23 runs in the 18th over before being run out in the final over. Shepherd completed his half-century with an inside edge off the last ball of the innings, but South Africa managed to keep the total below a challenging target.
