England had already guaranteed a top-two finish in their Super 8 group following wins against Sri Lanka and Pakistan in Pallekele. However, they faced a tough situation, needing 42 runs from the last 17 balls to secure victory.

On a Colombo pitch known for its difficulty in scoring runs, Jacks and the recalled Ahmed, who each took two wickets during New Zealand's innings of 159 for seven, adopted an aggressive approach. Together, they compiled an unbeaten 44-run partnership off just 16 deliveries.

The pair notably each struck sixes in an over bowled by Glenn Phillips, which yielded 21 runs. Additionally, New Zealand captain Mitch Santner conceded 16 runs in his over. Ultimately, Jacks sealed the win by hitting the winning runs off Matt Henry, with three balls remaining.
