Second Rothesay Test, The Kia Oval (Day Two of Five)
New Zealand 391: Phillips 100, Blundell 51; Bethell 3-26
England 222-6: Gay 53, Root 46; Henry 2-57, O'Rourke 2-61
England find themselves in a challenging situation after a difficult day two in the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval. Following a promising first day without captain Ben Stokes, England lost momentum due to questionable tactics, a critical dropped catch, and an impressive maiden Test century from Glenn Phillips.
New Zealand extended their overnight score from 291-7 to 391 all out, largely thanks to Phillips' century and Blundell's 51. Despite Emilio Gay scoring a half-century and stand-in captain Joe Root contributing 46 runs, England experienced a collapse, losing three wickets for 35 runs to reach 177-5.
Later in the day, James Rew was dismissed after gloving a delivery from the aggressive Will O'Rourke, leaving England at 222-6, trailing by 169 runs with their tail exposed. Jordan Cox remained unbeaten on 22 alongside Jofra Archer, who had yet to score.
Day's Key Moments
The difficulties for England began immediately with the first ball of the day when they set a short-ball trap for Sonny Baker bowling to Kyle Jamieson. Baker's bouncer resulted in four byes, signaling a challenging day ahead.
Jamieson played a crucial innings, scoring 41 runs after Ben Duckett dropped a catch when Jamieson was on 15. Notably, Jofra Archer did not bowl during the first 90 minutes of play, including during the second new ball period, but eventually took a wicket with his fourth delivery.
England's troubles were compounded by a run-out of Duckett for 36, which occurred after a risky short single call from Gay that was not feasible.
Gay and Root then put together a 74-run partnership, providing some resistance. However, the dismissal of both Root and Harry Brook lbw to Matt Henry delivered a significant setback to England's innings.
