Jacks Hits Three Boundaries as England Add Crucial Runs

T20 World Cup, Group C, Kolkata

England 202-7 (20 overs): Jacks 53* (22), Banton 30 (21); Kalugamage 2-41

Italy 178 (20 overs): B Manenti 60 (25), Stewart 45 (23); Overton 3-18

England secured their place in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup by defeating tournament debutants Italy by 24 runs, despite facing a significant challenge. After posting a total of 202-7, England were nearly upset by Italy, who came close to pulling off one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history. A loss would have resulted in an embarrassing group-stage exit for Harry Brook's team.

Ben Manenti played a crucial innings, scoring 60 runs off 28 balls, bringing Italy within 89 runs of victory. Following his dismissal, which was the first of four wickets to fall in quick succession, 31-year-old Grant Stewart responded with a powerful 45 from 25 balls, keeping Italy's hopes alive.

Italy required 30 runs from the final 12 balls, but Sam Curran caught Stewart at short third to halt the momentum. With 25 runs needed from the last over and two wickets remaining, Jamie Overton took charge, wrapping up the innings and dismissing Italy for 178.

Despite the win, England's performance was far from convincing. Their progression included a final-ball victory over Nepal, a loss to the West Indies, and two tense wins against Scotland and Italy. Even while achieving their highest total of the tournament, England's batting showed vulnerabilities.

England were struggling at 105-5 before Will Jacks delivered a standout performance, scoring an unbeaten 53 from number seven. This marked his first fifty in T20 internationals and was England's quickest fifty in a T20 World Cup, coming off just 21 balls.

The result means Italy's tournament concludes in Mumbai on Thursday against the West Indies. England's Super 8 opponents are yet to be confirmed, but the next phase will take place in Sri Lanka starting Sunday. England will need to improve their form to remain competitive.

England Pushed Yet Again

Following their narrow victory over Scotland on Saturday, Harry Brook expressed hope that England's path through the remainder of the tournament would be less challenging.

"I hope the rest of the tournament is a bit more straightforward," Brook said after the Scotland match.

Italy have impressed during this World Cup, including a win over Nepal last week. However, they remain the lowest-ranked side in the tournament, positioned between Malaysia and Qatar.

Their chase was particularly notable given that Jofra Archer took two wickets in the first over. Manenti came to the crease after the fourth over when his brother, Harry Manenti, was caught off Jamie Overton. He and Mosca added 25 runs in the next two overs.

Even after Manenti was caught by Will Jacks—having hit the off-spinner for two sixes and two fours—Italy continued their aggressive approach. Archer was hit for two sixes in the 17th over, and Adil Rashid conceded three sixes in the 18th.

Sam Curran brought some control in the 18th over, conceding two wides but mostly singles and dot balls before dismissing Stewart.

Whether England have merely done enough to progress or have shown little indication of being serious contenders depends on one's perspective.

"England won – but they did it ugly yet again."
