Australia Clinch Dominant Win Over Oman in Final T20 World Cup Group Match
Oman scored 104 runs; Australia reached 108 for 1, winning by nine wickets.
The victory was achieved with more than 10 overs remaining.
Australia comprehensively defeated Oman by nine wickets in their last World Cup group match held in Pallekele on Friday. Both teams had already been eliminated from the tournament prior to this encounter.
Chasing a modest target of 105 runs, Mitchell Marsh displayed aggressive intent, swiftly dispatching Oman’s bowlers. He reached his half-century off just 26 balls within the first powerplay overs.
Oman’s Shakeel Ahmed collided with wicketkeeper Vinayak Shukla when he dismissed Travis Head, who was caught and bowled off a top edge after scoring 32 runs. The 38-year-old spinner celebrated the wicket enthusiastically by performing Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic goal celebration.
Marsh remained unbeaten on 64 runs, hitting seven boundaries and four sixes, guiding Australia to victory with 62 balls to spare. This chase equaled the record for the fastest successful pursuit of a total exceeding 100 runs. Australia concluded the group stage in third place with two wins and two losses, while Oman finished at the bottom with no points.
Australia’s Bowling Performance Restricts Oman to 104
Australia’s bowlers delivered a precise and effective performance, dismissing Oman for 104 runs in 16.2 overs after winning the toss and electing to field first. Adam Zampa was the standout bowler, taking four wickets for 21 runs.
Xavier Bartlett set the tone early by taking a wicket with the very first ball of the match, dismissing Aamir Kaleem. Bartlett’s bowling movement troubled the Omani batsmen, and he claimed another wicket by bowling Jatinder Singh in his subsequent over.
Oman attempted to stabilize their innings, but none of the batsmen managed to convert their starts into significant scores. Wasim Ali was the only player to offer notable resistance, scoring 32 runs off 33 balls as wickets fell steadily at the other end.
Australia’s spinners dominated the middle overs, exploiting Oman’s frequent misjudgments in shot selection and poor line choices.
