Australia Dominates Bangladesh at Headingley
In the Women's T20 World Cup Group 1 match at Headingley, Australia delivered a commanding performance against Bangladesh. Bangladesh were bowled out for 77-8 in their 20 overs, with Sophie Molineux, Ellyse Perry, and Kim Garth each taking two wickets. Molineux and Perry both recorded figures of 2-14, while Garth took 2-18.
Australia chased down the target swiftly, reaching 78-1 in just 9.3 overs. Georgia Voll was the standout batter, scoring an unbeaten 45 runs off 32 balls, including a notable straight six. This victory followed Australia's earlier comprehensive win over South Africa, the 2024 runners-up.
Fast bowler Kim Garth made an early impact by dismissing both Bangladesh openers, reducing them to 27-5. Bangladesh struggled to recover and eventually finished at 77-8. Australia's bowling attack was effective despite missing key players Phoebe Litchfield and Ashleigh Gardner due to injuries.
Australia now prepares to face the Netherlands at Southampton on Saturday and Pakistan at Headingley on Tuesday. Litchfield is expected to miss these two matches but may return for the final group game against India on 28 June. Gardner, sidelined with an ankle sprain, has no confirmed return date.
India Crushes Netherlands with Dominant Batting and Bowling
Later at the same venue, India maintained their strong form by defeating the Netherlands by 95 runs. The 50-over world champions posted a formidable total of 209-5, led by Smriti Mandhana's elegant 74 off 47 balls. Richa Ghosh's aggressive batting added 20 runs from just eight balls, pushing India past the 200-run mark. The Netherlands struggled in response, being bowled out for 114 in 17.3 overs. Captain Babette de Leede top-scored with 28 runs.
India's bowling was spearheaded by left-arm spinner Sree Charani, who took 4-19, while part-time bowler Shafali Verma claimed 3-20. Despite the team's strong performance, India suffered an injury setback when spinner Shreyanka Patil twisted her ankle while fielding and was stretchered off the pitch.
