Chang stuns Murphy to make history at Welsh Open
China's Chang Bingyu delivered a stunning performance at the Welsh Open, defeating former champion Shaun Murphy 4-0 in the first round and becoming only the ninth player ever to achieve four consecutive century breaks.
The 23-year-old, ranked 54th globally and 46 places below Murphy, defied expectations by ending the 2020 winner's campaign at Venue Cymru, Llandudno, in a decisive manner.
Home favorite Jackson Page also secured a 4-0 victory against Belgium's Luca Brecel, advancing to the second round.
Similarly, Switzerland's Alexander Ursenbacher was defeated 4-0 by China's Zhou Yuelong.
England's 19-year-old Stan Moody won his opening match without dropping a frame against fellow Englishman Jimmy Robertson. Another Chinese contender, Zhao Xintong, began his pursuit of a third consecutive ranking title by narrowly defeating compatriot Fan Zhengyi 4-3.
In other first-round matches, England's Gary Wilson recorded a 4-0 whitewash over Iran's Amir Sarkhosh, while Zhang Anda overcame Mitchell Mann 4-2 as players prepared for the upcoming rounds.
