Billam-Smith Stops Rozicki in Zuffa Boxing's UK Debut

Chris Billam-Smith has secured 14 of his 22 victories by stoppage.

British boxer Chris Billam-Smith delivered a determined performance to defeat Ryan Rozicki by technical knockout after seven intense rounds at Zuffa Boxing's inaugural UK event held in Bournemouth.

The former WBO cruiserweight champion applied relentless pressure throughout an electrifying bout, ultimately breaking through with a combination of hooks at the conclusion of the seventh round.

Following Rozicki's retreat to the corner, his team threw in the towel, prompting Billam-Smith to ascend the ropes in celebration.

Both fighters received medical attention in the ring, with Rozicki requiring oxygen before the two embraced and raised their arms to an appreciative crowd at the Bournemouth International Centre.

Billam-Smith did not participate in post-fight media interviews, and Zuffa Boxing president Dana White later confirmed that both fighters were taken directly to hospital.

"I've never seen a puncher like that. The power that guy [Rozicki] possesses is something else," Billam-Smith's coach Shane McGuigan told Sky Sports.
"As a friend, as a coach, it was horrible to sit there and watch but he [Billam-Smith] stayed patient, he's been out the ring for a long time and there was definitely some ring rust but he outlasted an extremely tough man.
"He loves a tear-up no matter where he is but when he's in the BIC it's even worse. He had to fight that way, Rozicki was exhausted after a couple of rounds but he kept coming.
"Chris is resilience in abundance. He's a determined man, a family man and everything you would want in a role model."

This victory marks Billam-Smith's 22nd win in 24 professional fights.

Fight Overview

The contest was action-packed from the outset, with Rozicki taking the initiative while Billam-Smith sought to connect with power punches and hooks from a defensive position.

Rozicki, competing outside Canada for the first time, was cautioned in the opening round for headbutting and penalized a point in the second round for repeated infractions.

After three rounds, both fighters showed signs of fatigue, having maintained a high tempo throughout the bout.

Entering the fifth round, Rozicki had sustained cuts above both eyes and absorbed significant punishment, yet the 31-year-old continued to respond aggressively, landing impactful shots.

Billam-Smith, making his debut under the Zuffa Boxing banner, unleashed a series of at least 10 consecutive hooks in the sixth round after cornering Rozicki.

They exchanged punches in the seventh round before Billam-Smith delivered a flurry of hooks leading up to the bell.

Judges' scorecards showed Billam-Smith leading unanimously with scores of 68-64, 68-64, and 69-63 prior to Rozicki's corner ending the fight.

Zuffa Boxing Establishes Presence in the UK

Zuffa Boxing, launched in January and led by UFC president Dana White, aims to innovate within the sport of boxing.

Their UK debut, secured through a broadcast agreement with Sky Sports, occurred amid legal threats from British promoter Boxxer, alleging that Billam-Smith, Jack Massey, and Sam Hickey competed without proper authorization.

The event progressed rapidly, with seven of eight fights concluding before the final bell across both preliminary and main cards.

The main event ring walks began at 21:15 BST. Rozicki entered carrying a book honoring legendary boxer Jack Dempsey and wore brown gloves and boots as a tribute to the late heavyweight champion.

Several prominent figures from the boxing community attended, including welterweight Conor Benn, who signed with Zuffa Boxing in February, as well as British heavyweights Derek Chisora and David Adeleye.

Local dignitaries were present as well, with AFC Bournemouth co-CEO Jim Frevola seated behind Zuffa Boxing executives Dana White and Nick Khan. UFC flyweight Lone'er Kavanagh and WWE star Finn Balor were also ringside.

The Bournemouth International Centre has a reputation for vibrant atmospheres during Billam-Smith's fights, a tradition that continued during this event.

The most enthusiastic responses came for local fighters, including Bournemouth middleweight Lee Cutler, who also secured a victory.

Future Prospects for Billam-Smith

Chris Billam-Smith lost the WBO cruiserweight title in 2024.

Upon signing with Zuffa Boxing, Billam-Smith expressed his intention to face Australian cruiserweight Jai Opetaia.

The two fighters engaged in a public rivalry while Opetaia held the IBF title and Billam-Smith the WBO belt.

Since losing his world title to Gilberto Ramirez, Billam-Smith has prioritized pursuing high-profile fights over competing for belts.

Opetaia currently holds the Zuffa cruiserweight title and could potentially face Billam-Smith next if Dana White opts to match his top fighters.

The main event on Saturday was a physically demanding encounter, with Billam-Smith sustaining a cut above his right eye, indicating that a swift return to the ring may not be imminent.
