Potter Secures Second Place in Sardinia; Yee Withdraws
Britain's Beth Potter achieved her third podium finish of the season by placing second at the World Triathlon Series event in Alghero, Sardinia. Meanwhile, Olympic champion Alex Yee was unable to complete the men's race.
Yee, who returned to triathlon competition two weeks ago in Yokohama finishing fifth after dedicating time to marathon training for 2025, faced challenges during the race. The 28-year-old Olympic champion managed to avoid multiple crashes during the cycling segment but began the running phase one minute and a half behind the leading group, led by Italy's Alessio Crociani. He struggled to close the gap.
With the intense heat and the distance to the leaders increasing, Yee slowed to a walk before ultimately retiring after completing the first of four 2.5km laps.
Portugal's Vasco Vilaca won the men's event in a time of 1:45.16, marking his second victory of the season. He was followed by Brazil's Miguel Hidalgo at 1:45.35, and Vilaca's fellow Portuguese competitor Ricardo Batista in third place with 1:45.45.
Potter's Strong Season Continues Despite Narrow Defeat
On the women's side, Potter, who earned bronze in Paris and won the season opener in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, as well as finishing second in Yokohama, was a strong contender. However, her bid for victory in the first race of the Los Angeles Olympics qualification window was thwarted by a late surge from France's Olympic champion Cassandre Beaugrand.
Beaugrand secured her third consecutive win on the Italian island with a time of 1:53.49. Potter finished just four seconds behind, with Germany's Lisa Tertsch taking third place five seconds further back.
"The start of the season has gone better than I hoped and I'm pleased to back up my two results," said Potter.
"I knew I would be strong over 10k, maybe not have the kick at the end, but I hung tough and I'm happy with second today."
Georgia Taylor-Brown finished sixth after falling behind the lead group early in the run, building on her first T100 win last week.
