A 68-year-old man has died on the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons while participating in an endurance event designed to assist in training special forces personnel.

Emergency services were called to the Pen-y-Fan area at approximately 11:00 am on Saturday.

Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed that the 68-year-old man died following concerns about his welfare.

Organisers of the Fan Dance race, Avalanche Endurance Events (AEE), expressed their condolences to the man's family and are working on providing a full timeline of events.

The race is described as the "oldest and most renowned special forces selection test in the world" and is considered an "integral part" of the SAS selection route in Britain.

According to the organisers, the 15-mile race typically takes between three and seven hours to complete, depending on weather conditions.

"We have had a fatality during the Fan Dance Race Series event on Saturday 4 July."
"Our focus and thoughts are with the family and there is no intention to issue any further statements until the family have a full timeline of what happened and approve any further communication."
"Our team is working on this currently... we would like to thank the Air Ambulance Service, Brecon Beacons Mountain Rescue Team, and the AEE Mountain Safety Team for their swift response and professionalism."

Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed officers were dispatched following an emergency call expressing concerns about the man's welfare, but unfortunately, the 68-year-old man died.
