Hannah Brier Sets New Welsh 200m Record

Hannah Brier has confirmed her position as the fastest Welsh woman ever by breaking the national 200m record with a time of 22.79 seconds at the Stratford Speed Grand Prix in London.

The previous Welsh record stood for 44 years and was held by Michelle Scutt, who ran 22.80 seconds in Antrim in June 1982.

Brier, a Swansea Harrier athlete, also holds the Welsh 100m record of 11.26 seconds, which she established at the same Stratford event in 2025.

The 28-year-old from Neath had earlier set a new Welsh indoor best this year, clocking 23.25 seconds at the UK Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham in February.

In 2024, Brier nearly retired from athletics due to difficulties balancing her career as a youth worker with the demands of an intense training schedule.

She has represented Team Wales at two Commonwealth Games, first as a 16-year-old at the 2014 Glasgow Games and later at the 2022 Games in Birmingham.

Brier has achieved the Commonwealth B qualifying standard for both the 100m and 200m events for the upcoming Games in Glasgow this summer.

Personal Best and GB Call-Up

Earlier in her career, Hannah Brier became the fastest Welsh woman after running a personal best in the women's 100m heat at the UK Athletics Championships in Manchester.

At 24 years old, the Swansea Harrier won her heat with a time of 11.33 seconds, surpassing her previous best of 11.39 seconds, a time she previously shared with Sallyanne Short and Elaine O'Neill.

Brier advanced to the semi-finals held on Saturday, where she was set to compete against Britain's fastest woman, Dina Asher-Smith.

She was also selected for the Wales team at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games later that summer, joining her brother Joe, who competes in the 400m.
