Lockdown Initiated Due to Air Quality Concerns
Several floors within the Pentagon have been placed under lockdown following the identification of an "air quality issue," which led to the deployment of hazardous material (hazmat) response teams to the site.
According to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, the building's systems detected an issue that requires precautionary measures until its significance is fully assessed.
"The Department is executing standard protection protocols, including a shelter-in-place order for the affected area," Parnell stated.
Emergency Response and Protective Measures
Assistance is being provided by Arlington Fire & EMS, who confirmed via social media their response to a hazardous materials incident at the Pentagon.
Reports from US media indicate that police officers inside the building are equipped with gas masks and full chemical protective gear as a precaution.
Official Communications and Instructions
Just before 11:00 EST (16:00 GMT), the Pentagon Force Protection Agency issued an email directing personnel to shelter in place across four corridors spanning the second to fifth floors, as reported by CBS News, the BBC's US news partner.
"The email told staff to comply with the directive and move in-person meetings to virtual meetings," CBS News reported.
Significance of the Pentagon
The Pentagon, situated in northern Virginia near Washington DC, serves as the headquarters for the US Department of Defense. It houses more than 20,000 government employees who work within the building.
