US Celebrates 250 Years as Trump Turns 80

As the United States prepares to commemorate its 250th anniversary of independence from Britain, former President Donald Trump marks his 80th birthday. The weekend initiates a series of grand celebrations for the nation’s milestone, alongside Trump’s personal milestone.

Historically, presidents have used such significant anniversaries to foster national unity. However, Trump’s approach contrasts sharply, as he is organizing a cage fight event. The president insists that every patriotic American will either enjoy the festivities or at least focus on the celebration rather than his involvement.

Mehdi Hasan’s Perspective on the Current State

Mehdi Hasan, a US columnist and editor-in-chief of Zeteo, offers a critical view of the situation. He emphasizes that despite the celebrations, there is little cause for optimism.

“He’s a deeply unpopular president. He’s one of the most unpopular presidents in modern American history at this point in his presidency, if not the most unpopular president. And he is nakedly, brazenly, unashamedly trying to hijack these celebrations.”

Concerns about Trump’s health have been circulating, but Hasan stresses that the nation’s condition is of greater importance. He highlights a significant threat to the country’s foundational principles.

“There’s a very serious assault on the constitution, on liberal democracy, on the idea of three co-equal branches of government. And we lose track of that with the UFC and the gold and the ballroom. But this is actually a very, very dangerous moment for American democracy at 250 years.”

Hasan’s remarks were made during a conversation with Nosheen Iqbal, underscoring the gravity of the current political climate as the US marks its quarter-millennium anniversary.
