Bill Gates to Testify Before Congress on Epstein Connections

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and a leading philanthropist, is scheduled to appear before a congressional committee on Wednesday to discuss his past association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Gates is voluntarily appearing in Washington, expressing his willingness to respond to inquiries regarding his relationship with Epstein ahead of the House Oversight Committee.

Epstein died by suicide in a jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial. His longtime associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for her involvement in Epstein's crimes.

Gates's connection to Epstein gained broader public attention following the US Department of Justice's (DOJ) recent release of over three million pages of documents related to the criminal investigation of Epstein. Gates's name appears thousands of times in these documents.

He has consistently denied any wrongdoing and rejected suggestions that he was aware of Epstein's illegal activities. However, in a television interview earlier this year, Gates admitted to exercising poor judgment in meeting Epstein.

"I was foolish to spend time with him. I was one of many people who regret ever knowing him,"

Among the DOJ-released materials is a photograph that seemingly shows Gates near an aircraft with Epstein's pilot present. Gates has acknowledged traveling with Epstein on a private jet, a fact that has affected many individuals linked to Epstein.

Additional images depict Gates with his arm around Epstein and several unidentified women.

The documents also include draft emails attributed to Epstein containing a series of unverified and contested claims about Gates's personal life. These allegations include Epstein facilitating "illicit trysts" with "married women" for Gates, Gates contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI) from what Epstein referred to as "Russian girls," and Epstein assisting Gates in obtaining drugs to treat the infection.

A separate email alleges that Gates attempted to "surreptitiously" provide his then-wife Melinda with antibiotics to protect her from the same infection. Gates strongly denies these allegations but has admitted to having affairs with two Russian women.

Three Major Questions for Gates from the Congressional Committee

1. Why Did Gates Associate with a Convicted Sex Offender?

Gates has explained that his relationship with Epstein was transactional, focused on discussions about philanthropy and potential funding for his foundation, which ultimately did not materialize.

His public statements do not clarify what specifically initiated their connection.

According to Gates, their association began in 2011—three years after Epstein was convicted in Florida on two charges of soliciting prostitution, including one involving a minor under 18. Their interactions continued through 2014, a considerable period during which Epstein failed to provide any assistance to the foundation.

Robert Garcia, the lead Democrat on the committee, commented on Monday:

"Bill Gates was still communicating with Jeffrey Epstein, even after some of this kind of horrific information about him and what he was doing was public to a lot of folks, and so we want to ask Mr Gates, why continue that relationship?

Who else did he see? What else might he know? And who else should we be bringing in to ask questions of?"

2. Why Did Gates Not Investigate Epstein's Background More Thoroughly?

Gates informed staff at his foundation in February that he was aware of some "18-month thing" that restricted Epstein's travel but admitted he did not conduct a thorough background check.

This explanation is expected to be scrutinized during the committee's questioning.

Lawmakers are likely to examine the plausibility that Gates, a leading figure in the information technology sector, remained largely uninquisitive about Epstein's background, despite public knowledge of his criminal history, during a period when the two appeared to spend significant time together.

3. Did Epstein Attempt to Influence Gates, or Vice Versa?

In its invitation letter to Gates, the committee stated it believes he may have valuable information regarding "the ways in which Mr Epstein and Ms Maxwell sought to curry favor and exercise influence to protect their illegal activities."

This suggests a possible motive for Epstein's interest in associating with Gates, who, while not a politician, is a global figure with extensive networks and influence.

The committee implies that Epstein sought not only powerful acquaintances but also opportunities to leverage these contacts for illicit purposes.

Epstein appeared to invest significant effort in cultivating such relationships, often blurring the lines between business and social interactions.

He maintained extensive records of his contacts, as evidenced by the large volume of emails, photographs, and other documents now publicly available.

Epstein hosted, entertained, and transported individuals to vacations at his various properties. It is conceivable that some information he collected about his associates could have been used to exert pressure or influence, although there is no evidence this occurred in Gates's case.

Nonetheless, details about the alleged STI—denied by Gates—could have been potentially embarrassing and damaging if Epstein had chosen to use them.

Congressman Suhas Subramanyam, another Democrat on the committee, told the BBC:

"We want to know whether Epstein wanted to influence Gates or even whether he blackmailed Gates in any way like he allegedly did with others."

From Gates's perspective, his stated motivation was to raise funds for global health initiatives. Earlier this year, the Gates Foundation stated:

"On the basis of Epstein's claims that he could mobilise significant philanthropic resources for global health and development, a small number of foundation employees interacted with Epstein to try to secure this potential funding."

However, the foundation added:

"Ultimately, the foundation did not pursue any collaboration with Epstein and no fund was ever created."

It further expressed regret over any employee interactions with Epstein.

The central question remains: why did Gates spend considerable time with someone who failed to deliver on promises? This is expected to be a key focus during the congressional hearing.
