Wildfire Near Snake Pass
Fire crews are responding to a wildfire impacting an extensive area of moorland close to the Snake Pass, a notable driving route through the Peak District.
Five fire engines were dispatched to the scene near Glossop following a report received at 20:58 BST on Thursday.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) reported a "significant smoke plume" that has reduced visibility on nearby roads.
Authorities have advised anyone who sees or smells smoke to keep windows and doors closed. Both residents and motorists have been urged to avoid the vicinity.
DFRS indicated that the firefighting efforts are supported by two water carriers, a command support unit, a welfare unit, and a rural unimog.
"The fire is currently affecting approximately 1,500 by 300 metres of moorland,"the service stated, noting that additional partners such as the Fire Operations Group (FOG) and Derby Mountain Rescue are also present at the location.
Traffic and Safety Measures
Derbyshire Police confirmed that the A57 road near the fire remains open.
"However, there is no parking at Snake Summit until further notice,"the police added.
"Please do not stop or park on verges or lay-bys, and follow any instructions from emergency services on scene."
Response from Moorland Groups
The Peak District Moorland Group, comprising moorland gamekeepers, expressed concern over the incident.
"Very sad to report an ongoing wildfire incident on National Trust-owned ground.
Neighbouring moorland gamekeepers were tackling the fire throughout the night, some stayed all night and others are rejoining them this morning."
The group also reported that gamekeepers addressed 36 incidents involving wild camping and open fires over the previous weekend.
Furthermore, the National Gamekeepers' Organisation has elevated the wildfire risk index to red for all moorland areas across England and Wales.
