The deaths of four members of the same family, including a seven-month-old baby, after a crash near Derby on Saturday night have been described as a "devastating tragedy". Abu Camara, 36, his wife, 30, their infant daughter and an 18-year-old woman, believed to be a cousin, died when the red Hyundai they were travelling in left the road and struck trees near the Toyota Island junction on the A38 at about 23:00 BST on Saturday.
What happened in the crash?
The car left the road near Derby, close to the Toyota Island, and struck trees at the side of the A38. The three adults were pronounced dead at the scene, while the baby was taken to hospital but died a short time later, police said.
Derbyshire Police said the driver, a 33-year-old man, suffered serious injuries. He was initially arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but later bailed.
Who were the family members?
The family were from Leeds and were part of the city's Gambian diaspora. Community tributes described them as kind, humble and selfless, and said Abu Camara, also known as Buba, was deeply involved in local life.
It is believed the family were travelling back north after attending an event in Birmingham earlier in the day for people from the west African country's Sarahule community.
What have community groups said?
The Gambia Welfare Society Leeds asked people to
"give their families strength and patience during this heartbreaking time". It described Abu as a
"dedicated servant"to the local community who mentored children through football.
"He will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and selfless service", the society added.
Another member of the Gambian community said Abu was a
"respected youth leader"whose life was defined by faith, honesty, humility and
"selfless service".
"He dedicated himself to uplifting young people, strengthening community ties and promoting unity among all,"they added.
How is the police investigation continuing?
A police spokesperson said the relatives of those involved are aware and are receiving support from specialist officers.
"Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."
