Fire Incident at West Dunbartonshire School Linked to TikTok Trend

Fire services responded to an incident at Our Lady & St Patrick's High School in Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire, after a pupil deliberately set a school laptop on fire. This act was reportedly inspired by a TikTok trend involving short-circuiting electronic devices.

The fire, which occurred last week, did not result in any injuries. Authorities confirmed that the device involved was a Chromebook, commonly used by pupils at the school.

The 'Chromebook Challenge' Trend

Over the past year, numerous videos have surfaced on TikTok showing individuals intentionally causing Chromebooks to catch fire. This challenge involves damaging the devices by breaking charging pins or inserting metal objects into power ports, which leads to overheating and sometimes ignition.

Such actions pose significant safety risks, including electrical shocks and fires.

Council Response and Safety Measures

West Dunbartonshire Council has addressed the incident by communicating with parents and pupils to raise awareness. A council spokesperson stated:

"The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended one of our schools following a small fire believed to be connected to the vandalism of an electronic device.
No-one was injured and there was no wider damage caused.
We have spoken with pupils in our schools and have also lettered parents for awareness."

Despite the incident, Chromebooks remain in use within the school.

Background and Wider Concerns

The 'Chromebook Challenge' originated in the United States last year, prompting warnings from various police departments to parents about the dangers of this behaviour. The trend has raised concerns due to the potential for serious harm to participants and others.
