SNP Claims Shetland Seat from Lib Dems

The Scottish National Party (SNP) has captured the Shetland seat, a traditional stronghold of the Liberal Democrats. SNP candidate Hannah Goodlad secured 47% of the vote, surpassing the Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate Emma Macdonald, who received 34%.

The Liberal Democrats have maintained political dominance in Shetland for several decades.

Alistair Carmichael, the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Orkney and Shetland, extended his congratulations to the SNP and acknowledged the challenging nature of the local campaign.

"It had been a difficult campaign locally."

Orkney Islands Seat Retained by Lib Dems

Earlier in the election process, the neighbouring Orkney Islands seat was the first to declare its results. The Liberal Democrats successfully held this seat with Liam McArthur emerging victorious.
