Sinkhole Causes Major Disruption on Annan Road
The Annan Road is typically one of the busiest routes for traffic entering and leaving Dumfries, providing access to and from the town's bypass.
However, since the sudden formation of a sinkhole and the subsequent closure of the road over a week ago, the area has been unusually quiet.
Scottish Water initiated emergency repairs after a "void opened beneath the carriageway" on 28 May but indicated it was still too early to determine the duration of the repair work.
For Rudi Miroli, who has operated the Noblehill Cafe for more than 40 years, the impact on his business, located adjacent to the sinkhole, has been significant, with no clear timeline for resolution.

Extent of Repairs and Impact on Local Business
The full scope of the necessary repairs is gradually becoming clearer following the initial closure.
Scottish Water reported that the damaged sewer lies approximately 4 meters (13 feet) underground, requiring the entire width of the road for the repair operations.
A ladder descends into a large, square hole in the carriageway, with vehicles parked around a broader fenced-off zone.
Miroli faces an uncertain wait to learn how long the repairs will take and when normal traffic and footfall might resume.
"I spoke to the guys doing the job a couple of days ago and they still hadn't dug down deep enough to fully assess it but they're talking three weeks and possibly longer,"
"The road is closed coming from the town centre to our shop.
What is normally a busy road is now a very quiet road so obviously the footfall's greatly reduced."
He noted that they are monitoring the situation daily.
"We're over 50% down in turnover, which is understandable, but really appreciate a lot of our customers who have shown tremendous loyalty and made the effort to come,"
However, Miroli expressed frustration over the lack of detailed information regarding the repair progress.
"It's very frustrating because obviously we really don't know how much stuff to order, how much stuff to put on,"
"It's worrying at this moment in time.
I'm sure things will be fine once it's all done, but how long is that going to be?"

Scottish Water's Response and Safety Measures
Scottish Water emphasized that the repairs could only be conducted safely with a full road closure in place.
They acknowledged the importance of the Annan Road as a key route for Dumfries residents.
"We appreciate this is a key route for people in Dumfries and everything will be done to minimise any disruption and to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible,"
"It is too early to say how long the road closure will be in place, but we will have a better idea once the damaged sewer has been exposed and surveyed.
We would like to thank everyone affected for their patience and understanding."
Footpaths remain open, and diversions have been implemented while contractor Clancy carries out the repair work.

Local Businesses Await Resolution
Local shopkeepers can only observe and wait to see when the restrictions will be lifted and normal trade can resume.
