Charity Organizes Fundraising Week to Support School Uniform Costs

Little Stars, a charity assisting Shropshire families with school uniform expenses, is preparing to hold a fundraising week.

Founded in 2020 by Leanne Farlie, the charity also accepts donations of unwanted school uniforms.

Farlie noted the average cost of a secondary school uniform is approximately £289, excluding shoes, describing this as

"quite an astronomical cost for a lot of families"
.

Wear Stars 4 Little Stars Week is scheduled to take place from 22 to 28 June.

During this week, Farlie encourages individuals to wear star-themed clothing, share photos on social media, and contribute donations to the charity.

Last year, 12 businesses and schools participated, and Farlie hopes to increase involvement this year.

Origins and Growth of Little Stars

Farlie began the charity while on maternity leave, aiming to redistribute baby clothes she no longer needed to those in need.

On the charity's website, she shared her personal background:

"Having grown up in the deprived area of Harlescott, I personally experienced financial hardship and witnessed the challenges local families faced. I knew, without a doubt, that our community would benefit immensely from such a service."

The charity has since evolved and, in 2022, moved into its own premises in Shrewsbury, which Farlie described as a

"game changer"
due to the increasing demand requiring dedicated space.

In 2023, Little Stars launched the Cool for School Campaign, providing uniform essentials to over 900 children across Shropshire.

Ongoing Needs and Challenges

Farlie expressed gratitude for the donations received but emphasized that they remain insufficient.

She highlighted that certain items, such as white polo shirts, are rarely donated and require funding to purchase.

The period leading up to the summer holidays is particularly busy, as families face increased costs when children experience growth spurts.

Farlie explained:

"It is the time when families see the increase in cost because all of a sudden their son's had a growth spurt or their daughter's had a growth spurt."

For families already managing tight budgets, these additional expenses can be challenging.

Despite these difficulties, Farlie finds the work deeply rewarding.

She stated:

"As a founder to see people getting behind the work that I do, it is really heartwarming and overwhelming to see the belief that people have."
