Farage to Address Future in Public Life

Nigel Farage has announced he will make a statement regarding his "future in public life" amid renewed scrutiny over financial support he has received.

The Reform UK leader's statement, scheduled for 14:00 BST, follows revelations that he did not declare benefits provided by an ally previously convicted of fraud in the United States. Rival political parties are calling for a parliamentary investigation into the matter.

Parliamentary Investigation and Undeclared Gift

Separately, Farage has been under investigation by Parliament's standards commissioner since May after failing to declare a £5 million gift from a billionaire donor to Reform UK prior to his election as the Member of Parliament for Clacton.

Farage maintains that he was not required to declare any of the benefits under Commons rules and insists he has committed no wrongdoing.

Financial Support and Donors

Scrutiny of Farage's finances intensified earlier this year when it was revealed he received a £5 million gift from Christopher Harborne, a Thailand-based British cryptocurrency investor, in April 2024 before entering Parliament.

Harborne is one of Reform UK's most significant financial backers, having donated £15 million to the party since the beginning of last year.

Support from George Cottrell

Over the weekend, The Sunday Times reported that Farage also received support ahead of the 2024 election from George Cottrell, a longtime ally who was sentenced to eight months in prison in the US in 2017 after pleading guilty to wire fraud.

This support reportedly included funding for staff who provided Farage's security and managed his social media content.

According to the newspaper, Farage also utilized a property near Buckingham Palace that was rented by Cottrell.
