Significant Fine Imposed on Morrisons Bakery

A Morrisons bakery was fined a total of £750,000 following a discovery of unsanitary conditions at one of its branches.

The family-run supermarket chain received a fine of £737,000, which was reduced from an initial £1.1 million due to an early guilty plea. In addition, Morrisons was ordered to pay costs amounting to £11,221.38 and a victim surcharge of £2,000.

Inspection Reveals Multiple Violations

In August 2024, environmental health officers from Torfaen council conducted a routine inspection at the Morrisons branch located in Cwmbran. This inspection uncovered numerous breaches of food safety regulations.

Among the violations identified were poor cleanliness standards, dirty equipment, insufficient staff supervision, and failures in food safety management.

Legal Proceedings and Court Remarks

During the hearing at Newport Magistrates' Court on Thursday, Judge Sophie Toms emphasized that the case did not involve isolated misconduct by a few employees but rather serious and systemic failures within the bakery's operations.

She stated that Morrisons had endangered the health and safety of its customers, potentially putting lives at risk.

Official Statements

Following the case, Daniel Morelli, the council's public protection chief, commented on the council's stance regarding consumer safety.

"The council will not hesitate to take formal action where the health and well-being of consumers is placed at risk."

Morrisons responded to the incident with a statement acknowledging the shortcomings.

"We were very disappointed in the condition of the bakery in August 2024.
It fell far short of the standard our customers expect and that we should provide.
This was a single local issue which was dealt with immediately by working closely with the council.
The improvement made has been consistently maintained."
