Man Hospitalised Following Violent Burglary in Londonderry

A man was hospitalised after a "savage" attack by masked men during an aggravated burglary at a residence in Londonderry.

The incident occurred shortly before 21:00 GMT on Tuesday evening at a house located in the Melmore Gardens area of the city.

According to police reports, three masked men forcibly entered the property in Creggan and carried out a sustained assault on a man in his 40s while he was lying in bed, using weapons during the attack.

The victim was transported to hospital for treatment of his injuries and, as of Wednesday morning, remains under medical care.

Impact on Other Occupants and Police Response

Police confirmed that four other individuals were present inside the house at the time of the attack, including two teenagers. None of these occupants reported any physical injuries.

"This was a savage attack," said Detective Inspector Lizzie Ballentine from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).

"There is no justification for this violence," she added.

"The trauma caused by this attack will last far beyond the physical injuries.

Violence like this leaves deep psychological scars on victims, their families and young people."

Authorities have urged anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area between 20:30 and 21:00 GMT to come forward with information.

They have also requested that anyone possessing doorbell, CCTV, or dashcam footage from the vicinity during that time contact the police to assist with the investigation.
