A man extradited from Australia appeared at Belfast Magistrates' Court on Thursday charged with historical sexual offences. The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of 14 counts of indecently assaulting a female and three counts of committing an act of gross indecency with a child.

The allegations relate to offences said to have occurred on dates between January 1969 and March 1983. The defendant appeared in court via video-link from police custody and did not speak during the short hearing.

A defence barrister raised no objections to the execution of an international arrest warrant and confirmed no bail application was being made. The accused was remanded into custody and the case was adjourned until 20 August to fix a date for a preliminary inquiry.
