Conviction for Sexual Offences in Caithness
A man has been found guilty of raping a six-year-old boy and assaulting a teenage girl in the town of Wick, Caithness.
Liam Begg, aged 23, committed the first offence in April 2017 when he attacked the young boy at a residence in Wick.
In April 2018, Begg committed further offences by exposing himself and forcing a 14-year-old girl to perform a sexual act on him. He also molested the girl in Bignold Park, Wick.
Trial and Verdict
Begg denied multiple charges during his trial at the High Court in Edinburgh. However, he was convicted of two offences involving child victims. He was acquitted of an additional sexual assault charge.
Judge's Remarks and Sentencing Preparations
Following the guilty verdicts, Lady Ross, the presiding judge, addressed Begg directly:
"You should be in no doubt that these are serious convictions."
She expressed particular concern regarding the rape, stating:
"The rape caused her 'very serious concern'."
Lady Ross informed Begg, who is currently held at Inverness prison, that she would require reports prior to sentencing. She stated:
"I will also be asking for a report that will tell me about the level of risk you might present in the future."
Additionally, the judge noted that victim impact statements had been submitted and that she would consider these alongside a criminal justice social work report.
Background and Legal Measures
The court was informed that Begg has previous convictions, primarily related to breaches of court orders.
Following the convictions, Begg was placed on the sex offenders' register. His case will also be reported to Scottish ministers under the protection of vulnerable groups legislation.
Begg remains in custody and is scheduled to be sentenced on 8 July.
