King Charles Highlights UK-US Friendship on 250th Independence Anniversary
King Charles has emphasized the United Kingdom's "relationship founded on friendship" with the United States as the latter marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The Declaration, signed in 1776, formally established the United States of America’s independence from British colonial rule. This historic event is commemorated annually on July 4th.
In a message addressed to President Donald Trump and the American people, the King remarked on the enduring bond between the two nations.
"Through centuries of shared challenge and achievement," he said, "the two countries have built trust and a belief in liberty, the rule of law and the dignity of all people."
He further expressed optimism about the future of this relationship.
"As we look ahead to the next 250 years, I have no doubt we will continue to defend our shared values."
"The connection between our people is one that I trust will only grow stronger with time."
Celebrations in Washington DC and Across the US
These remarks coincide with President Trump’s participation in the Fourth of July celebrations in Washington DC. The festivities include flyovers by hundreds of aircraft and a fireworks display.
The annual fireworks show in Washington DC is a longstanding tradition. President Trump has pledged that this year’s event, scheduled to commence following his remarks, will be the "largest fireworks show in history."
Additional celebrations are taking place nationwide.
In New York, the Times Square Ball will descend eight times to mark midnight across all US time zones.
Philadelphia, the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed at Independence Hall 250 years ago, will host a concert featuring performers such as Christina Aguilera and Meek Mill.
